EGBA lauds EU’s proposed introduction of digital identification

In a move poised to advance the digital landscape of the European Union, the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has publicly commended the recent approval by the European Parliament of a groundbreaking digital identification (e-ID) framework. This legislative development mandates member states to issue an optional e-ID to citizens, facilitating secure online identity authentication for various services across the EU.

The critical vote took place on Monday, resulting in a significant victory for digital identity advocates, with 335 parliamentarians in support of the new regulations, while 190 opposed them amidst 31 abstentions. The proposed changes are viewed as a major step in creating a safer and more inclusive digital space for EU citizens.

One of the primary advantages of the new e-ID system is the elimination of the need for individuals to rely on commercial identity verification providers, a practice that has previously raised issues related to privacy and data security. By standardizing the identification process, the e-ID is expected to bolster security, reduce the risk of identity theft, and deter fraudulent activities online.

Businesses, too, stand to benefit significantly from the introduction of e-ID. Particularly for gambling operators within the EU, this digital framework promises reduced costs and administrative burdens by allowing them to forgo disparate commercial verification databases in favor of a unified system.

Maarten Haijer, the secretary general of EGBA, articulated the organization’s positive outlook on the parliamentary decision, stating, “We welcome the European Parliament’s approval of a unified digital identity framework and are confident that the use of the new e-ID in our sector will lead to a more seamless and trustworthy online experience for players and help to reduce costs and administration for gambling operators.”

EGBA has been a fervent advocate of the e-ID initiative, suggesting that the widespread adoption of digital IDs could “revolutionize” the manner in which EU citizens engage with online resources. Since the proposal for a new EU online identification system was laid out in 2021, the association has offered unwavering support.

With a goal set by the European Commission for 80% EU citizen engagement with the technology by 2030, the EGBA emphasizes the imperative for high participation rates to ensure the system’s efficacy. Although the use of e-ID will not be compulsory for gambling companies, its universal adoption is encouraged.

The process for e-ID implementation is now in the hands of the EU council of ministers, who will need to formally endorse the law. If approved, EU citizens could see e-IDs being adopted as early as the summer of this year.

The implementation of e-IDs comes at a time when EGBA’s commitment to responsible gambling is evident. A 2023 report highlighted that EGBA members sent a total of 45.5 million safer gambling messages to customers in 2022—a 20% increase from the previous year, with nearly half of those messages personalized to address concerning gambling behavior.

In addition to promoting safer gambling practices, the EGBA has been proactive in addressing cybersecurity. It recently established an expert group designed to tackle new threats and facilitate the exchange of information among its members, ultimately aiming to preempt future attacks. This initiative complements EGBA’s December 2022 proposal to develop a common European standard for identifying harmful gambling activities, thus ensuring a uniform approach to monitoring and intervention.

Together, these measures reflect EGBA’s ongoing efforts to foster a secure and responsible digital environment for the gaming and betting community across Europe, ultimately enhancing user trust and industry sustainability. As both consumer protection and business operations stand to gain from the establishment of the e-ID system, all eyes are now on the EU council of ministers for the next step in this landmark digital evolution.
