Danske Spil Reports Incremental Revenue Gain with Lottery Performance Peak in 2023

The Danish national gambling operator Danske Spil closed the 2023 fiscal year with a slight increment in overall revenue, primarily fueled by the robust performance of its lottery division. The total revenue for the year amounted to DKK5.04 billion, which marked a modest increase compared to the DKK4.98 billion reported in the prior year.

The lion’s share of the revenue was attributed to the Danske Lotteri Spil lottery division, where the gains were particularly noteworthy. The division’s revenue climbed by 2.5% to reach a record annual total of DKK2.87 billion. This upsurge was credited to the successful introduction of new gaming options coupled with an additional Eurojackpot draw.

Danske Spil’s other divisions experienced a mix of highs and lows. The Danske Licens Spil segment, which encompasses sports betting and online casino operations, witnessed a 3.0% drop in revenue to DKK1.61 billion. This decline was ascribed to a combination of factors including an unusually high repayment percentage on sports bets and heightened market competition.

The group’s gaming hall and land-based slots business, known as Elite Gaming, also reported a downturn. In 2023, Elite Gaming’s revenue dipped by 3.2% year-on-year, settling at DKK289.9 million. Despite these contractions, there was a silver lining with the performance of Danske Klasse-lotteri, the ‘class lottery’ which was assimilated into the Danske Spil portfolio in April 2022. Here, revenue surged by an impressive 30.1%, totaling DKK250.4 million.

Conversely, the Swush fantasy sports platform did not enjoy similar fortunes, as its revenue fell by 27.3% to DKK11.7 million. This division drew particular attention as Danske Spil divested its 60% ownership stake in Swush to the Danish tabloid newspaper Ekstra Bladet in January.

The financial figures of Danske Spil extended beyond revenue, with the report detailing significant costs incurred during the year. State taxes were considerable, coming in at DKK644.7 million. Behind this were dealer commissions, which totalled DKK459.6 million. Moreover, the company allocated DKK269.6 million to other gaming-related entities. These expenses culminated in an operating profit of DKK3.69 billion, paralleling the revenue increase with a 2.5% rise from the previous year.

Other financial aspects covered in the report included DKK32.9 million in miscellaneous income, accompanied by DKK247.5 million in depreciation and write-downs. Other external expenditures and personnel costs accounted for DKK1.16 billion. The finance costs were also considerable, amounting to DKK33.9 million.

After accounting for all operative costs and incomes, Danske Spil declared a pre-tax profit of DKK2.35 billion, marking a year-on-year increase of 6.0%. Taxes claimed DKK526.5 million of that profit, leaving the operator with a net profit of DKK1.82 billion, a 5.9% improvement from the previous year.

The financial health of Danske Spil, as seen through these numbers, presents a mixed but ultimately positive picture for the state-owned gambling operator. While certain segments like online betting and land-based operations faced headwinds, the revival through their lottery division and class lottery integration shows a resilient and adaptable business strategy capable of navigating the variable dynamics of the gambling industry. As Danske Spil moves forward, it will continue to adjust and refine its offerings in face of market challenges and regulatory environments.
