Over 100000 Users Engage with GambleAware’s Self-Help Tool Amid Rising Demand for Gambling Support Services

In what marks a significant step forward in the battle against gambling-related harm, GambleAware has announced that its self-assessment tool has been engaged by over 100,000 users. Notably, approximately one in four of these individuals, numbering around 28,000, sought additional support from a trained advisor through the National Gambling Helpline after using the tool.

The self-assessment tool, introduced by GambleAware, provides users with a series of statements to which they are asked to scale their gambling behaviors from 1 to 10, with 10 indicating the highest degree of applicability. This tool represents a proactive stride in encouraging individuals to reflect on their gambling habits and identify potential risks or harmful behavior.

Zoë Osmond, CEO of GambleAware, highlighted the importance of this achievement against the backdrop of an increased utilization of treatment and support available through the National Gambling Support Network, including a 20% rise in individuals receiving extended early intervention support. Osmond emphasized, “The figures released today underscore the critical role third-sector services play as part of a whole-system-approach to addressing gambling harms.”

As GambleAware, a charity commissioning prevention and treatment services, approaches the Government’s planned announcement around the restructure of the new system, the organization is advocating for a prevention-led approach. This approach calls for substantial investment into various avenues such as free, confidential support services, educational programs, public health campaigns, and digital resources. The goal is to provide tailored support to communities throughout Great Britain.

The self-assessment tool became accessible to the public in April 2023, parallel to the launch of GambleAware’s campaign ‘Let’s Open Up About Gambling’. This campaign strategically reached tens of millions, significantly contributing to the reduction of barriers faced by individuals seeking help and encouraging over 50% of them to take proactive steps against gambling harm.

The subsequent year saw not only the uptake of the self-assessment tool but also a record-breaking 24% increase in calls to the National Gambling Helpline commissioned by GambleAware. This surge evidences a growing need for a comprehensive, systematic response to tackle the societal impacts of gambling.

Further testimorning to the charity’s commitment in this space, GambleAware has equipped over 8,000 professionals from various sectors with the skills necessary to offer assistance to individuals grappling with the consequences of gambling harm.

In a demonstration of integrity, GambleAware firmly defended its track record following a complaint lodged to the Charity Commission by the Good Law Project. The complaint alleged that trustees at GambleAware were not fulfilling the organization’s educational aims towards gambling harm. It also raised concerns regarding the charity’s connections with the gambling industry and its reliance on industry funding. In response, Osmond affirmed that GambleAware maintains “robust independence from the gambling industry,” underlining the charity’s dedication to its mission.

As gambling-related issues increasingly come to the fore, the role of organizations like GambleAware becomes ever more pivotal. Through a combination of self-assessment tools, influential campaigns, and collaborative approaches encompassing various sectors of society, strides are being made to support those affected by gambling harm and safeguard communities from its potentially devastating effects. With continued efforts and investments, there is hope for sustained progress in the prevention and treatment of gambling-related challenges, providing essential lifelines for countless individuals.
