From Long Hours to Lucrative Outcomes: The Journey of a Persistent IT Entrepreneur

The Indian IT sector has been buoyed by rapid expansion, propelling India to renown as a global nexus of technology. Within this burgeoning sector, Ram Tavva, CEO of ExcelR, stands out as an inspiring figure. Ram’s story is one of unyielding dedication and strategic expertise that guided his enterprise to towering success.

Before charting his path as a business owner, Ram gained a wealth of experience and insights as a Sales Manager at Glaxo India Ltd (AFC). This formative role equipped him with a deep understanding of the business world, laying a solid foundation for his future endeavors. With resolute zeal and an eagerness to master his craft, Ram attained the position of Service Delivery Manager, further solidifying his industry credentials.

Keen to deepen his IT acumen, Ram pursued advanced studies at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kolkata. His pursuit of excellence didn’t stop there; he also achieved PMP and ITIL Expert certifications, which solidified his reputation as an IT industry virtuoso.

In 2013, with a vision to create impact and a resume that bespoke his expertise, Ram took a leap of faith and resigned from his distinguished position to establish ExcelR. The company came into existence to offer specialized training in Project Management, IT Service Management & Quality Assurance spaces, catering to the educational needs of aspiring professionals in these domains.

However, the journey wasn’t without its share of tribulations for ExcelR. In its infancy, the company grappled with resource constraints, with the team operating without a conventional office and enduring periods without salaries. Administrative hurdles also presented a prominent challenge during the company’s registration process, making it necessary for Ram to self-learn the intricacies of sales, marketing, and market research to steer his company forward.

Refusing to be daunted, Ram invested an intensive effort, working up to 20 hours a day. This unwavering effort led to ExcelR experiencing a significant turnaround; the business reached its break-even point after one and a half years and attained stability within three years.

It was during the unprecedented global crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic that Ram’s strategic leadership truly shone. Recognizing the unique challenges and opportunities that the situation presented, he innovated the company’s offerings by introducing combo courses and referral businesses, among other strategic initiatives. These moves proved to be incredibly successful, resulting in a remarkable surge in the company’s growth by 1200%.

According to the Financial Express, ExcelR achieved an impressive annual run rate of Rs 100 crore, alongside an Ebitda margin of approximately 22%, which comfortably surpasses industry norms.

Ram Tavva’s journey from enduring long work hours to building a genuinely prosperous company is a tale of inspiration for many budding entrepreneurs, particularly in the competitive IT industry. His dedication and strategic vision not only fostered a strong and lucrative business but also contributed to the larger narrative of India’s IT sector’s dynamic ascent in the global market.
