Santosh Kumar Patel’s life story is an inspiring tale of tenacity and fortitude that follows him from the hardships of rural poverty to his current position as a sub-divisional officer. Prior to this, he held the position of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in the Gwalior district’s Ghatigaon.
Growing up in rural Madhya Pradesh, Santosh faced severe financial troubles from an early age. His parents, who worked as agricultural labourers and masons, often struggled to provide their children with even the most basic necessities. Living in a small thatched one-room cottage, Santosh and his siblings encountered the harsh realities of deprivation daily. During the monsoon season, their books were often ruined by leaky roofs, forcing them to study at night under the dim light of a kerosene lamp.
Their sustenance came largely from government handouts and the modest produce from their small plot of land. Santosh vividly recalls the days when meals were limited to basic essentials like daliya (a type of porridge) or wheat flatbread, sometimes so scarce that they had to rely on food stolen from other students. Despite these obstacles, Santosh pursued his education with unwavering determination. From a young age, he realized the significance of hard work and frequently visited building sites to supplement his family’s income.
Santosh’s upbringing instilled in him a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for education. He understood that education could be his ticket out of the cycle of poverty and hard labour. Witnessing his father take on hazardous jobs to provide for the family only deepened his resolve. Santosh’s determination was further amplified when he himself fell ill, plunging the family into even more severe financial hardship.
Against all odds, Santosh excelled academically, becoming the district topper and making his family and village proud. However, financial constraints soon posed a significant challenge, forcing him to briefly divert his career plans in search of other sources of income.

Santosh prepared diligently for the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission exam, studying hard on his own. His efforts paid off when he secured an impressive rank, finally realising his dream of becoming a police officer. His journey to becoming a Deputy Superintendent of Police and later moving on to hold the current position of sub-divisional officer, is a testament to his relentless perseverance and resolve.
Since joining the police force, Santosh has been committed to helping his community, using his personal experiences to connect with and support people facing similar struggles. His innovative projects, like the Betul alcohol awareness campaign, showcase his dedication to bringing about positive change and serving justice.
