Animation Extravaganza Awaits at IDSFFK 2024

A grand showcase of 31 animation films, spanning across three distinct categories, will form a major highlight at the upcoming 16th edition of the International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK). This much-anticipated festival is scheduled to unfold in the capital city, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, from July 26 to 31, 2024.

A total of six films will represent the International category, seven will be showcased in the Indian Animations category, and a staggering 18 films will constitute the Speculum India Anima section. The latter is a special category curated by acclaimed filmmaker and animator, Shilpa Ranade.

This year’s International category promises a global cinematic journey enriched with creative storytelling and diverse animation techniques. The selection includes compelling titles such as “The Car That Came Back from the Sea,” a heartwarming narrative of a long-lost automobile, and “Percebes,” a vivid portrayal of barnacle harvesters. Additionally, “Musintasia,” a creative convergence of music and animation, “Mortelli – A Hopeless Case,” a tale steeped in dark humor, “Letter from Fukushima,” a poignant reflection on the aftermath of the nuclear disaster, and “Beautiful Men,” a visually stunning exploration of masculinity, will enthrall animation enthusiasts. Several films from the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival also enhance this international lineup, adding a touch of global prestige to IDSFFK.

Reflecting the vibrant and evolving landscape of Indian animation, the Indian Animations category features an eclectic mix of seven films. Of notable interest are two Malayalam films that explore regional themes with profound storytelling and unique artistic styles. Besides these, established and emerging directors such as Suresh Eriyat, Hansa Thapliyal, Athithi Krishnadas, Natasha Sharma, Subarna Dash, Nicole Elsa Daniel, and Athi Dixit will present their latest works, providing a window into the contemporary issues and creative expressions in Indian animation.

Themes within the Indian Animations category are as varied as they are significant. For instance, the harrowing realities of domestic violence are portrayed through powerful visual narratives, while other films delve into the experiences of women and children in a rehabilitation colony in Mumbai. Another film in this category beautifully encapsulates the haunting childhood memories of a runaway, offering audiences a mix of emotional depth and artistic innovation.
