New Delhi: As India readies itself to celebrate its 78th Independence Day, the palpable sense of patriotism and unity reverberates all across the nation. Among the multitudes who will be participating in the festivities is Brinda Dahal, a notable actress known for her role as Vaishnavi in Sun Neo’s acclaimed television series, ‘Chhathi Maiyya Ki Bitiya.’ A former resident of Nepal, Brinda has embraced India as her second home, and she shares her heartfelt appreciation for the significance of this landmark day and her personal journey of integrating into Indian culture.
Brinda, who hails from Nepal, has developed an extraordinary bond with India and its diverse cultural heritage. Reflecting on this connection, she stated, “Actually, I am from Nepal but by heart I am Indian. Independence means freedom, and when India got independence from the British, everyone understood the true essence of freedom and how it can transform a country. The upcoming Independence Day is the first one I will celebrate in India, and I am so excited for this celebration. My favorite patriotic movie is ‘Swades’; the storyline and Shah Rukh Khan’s acting are fabulous. I also love the song ‘Teri Mitti’ from ‘Kesari.’ Whenever I hear this song, my eyes fill with tears. If I ever get a chance to play a patriotic character, I would love to portray Indira Gandhi.”
Her enthusiasm and emotional attachment to India’s Independence Day are palpable. Brinda added, “I think India’s pride is the people of the country. I am Nepali, but they accept me in my character and praise me for my skills. Now I am Indian, and I feel so proud to be an Indian. From my side, Happy Independence Day to everyone. Like our country, stay independent, believe in yourself, and always look forward. My Massi’s birthday comes on the 15th of August, on Independence Day. Both are precious events for me on the same day. I am so excited.”
The show ‘Chhathi Maiyya Ki Bitiya,’ in which Brinda stars, captures the spirit of devotion and resilience vividly. It revolves around Vaishnavi, played by Brinda Dahal, an orphan who holds deep reverence for Chhathi Maiyya, seeing her as a maternal figure. The character of Chhathi Maiyya, portrayed by Devoleena Bhattacharjee, is imbued with divinity and offers unconditional protection and guidance to her devotees. The show beautifully encapsulates the essence of devotion to Chhathi Maiyya, focusing on themes of faith, courage, and the triumph of good over evil.

Reflecting further on her journey, Brinda said, “The character of Vaishnavi is very close to my heart. It’s fascinating how the audience has showered love and acceptance on me. It’s overwhelming to receive kind words for my portrayal, and this validation makes me feel more Indian than ever. The acceptance and respect I have received from my Indian fans are deeply cherished.”
As the countdown to the 78th Independence Day ensues, Brinda plans to observe the day with fervor and joy. “This day marks not just the freedom of a nation but the embodiment of unity and collective strength. Witnessing the celebrations and being a part of them for the first time in India is indeed special. The values instilled by the freedom struggle resonate deeply within me, despite not being Indian by birth. These values are universal,” she stated.
Looking forward, Brinda hopes to take on a variety of roles that resonate with her personal ideals and showcase the virtues of independence and resilience. She dreams of portraying iconic figures such as Indira Gandhi, whom she holds in high regard. “Playing a historical figure like Indira Gandhi would be an honor. Her strength and leadership are inspirational, and portraying her could be a humbling experience that also serves to educate and inspire younger generations,” she remarked.
Brinda’s zeal for celebrating Indian festivates also extends to her wishes for her fellow citizens. She concluded, “I wish everyone a very Happy Independence Day. Let’s continue to uphold the principles of freedom and unity that our forefathers fought for. This Independence Day is a reminder to appreciate the liberties we have and to strive for a better, more harmonious future.”
