Renowned French choreographer Mourad Merzouki is spearheading a distinctive production titled Cartes Blanches, which promises to fuse Indian talent into a contemporary French dance spectacle. Merzouki, who captured local headlines with his December staging of Pixel and gained global recognition for choreographing the French synchronized swimming team for the 2024 Olympics, is set to bring his expertise back to India.
Mourad Merzouki serves as the artistic director of Compagnie Käfig, a French dance company he founded, which emphasizes a cross-genre and cross-cultural collaborative approach. Compagnie Käfig is celebrated for its eclectic productions that integrate martial arts, fine arts, video elements, live music, and circus arts into hip-hop dance. For Cartes Blanches, the company partnered with the French Institute in India and the Prakriti Foundation to select six talented Indian dancers.
The origins of Cartes Blanches trace back to 2016 when the production was first created for Compagnie Käfig’s 20th anniversary. Speaking from France, Merzouki noted, “Cartes Blanches was written to mark our company’s 20th anniversary, and it serves as a celebration and tribute to all who have been a part of our journey.” He explained that the production eschews traditional narrative structures. “I created it as a platform for dancers who have collaborated with us to express their unique experiences through movement,” he added.
In a historic first, Indian dancers will join Cartes Blanches, merging their interpretations with Merzouki’s vision. The Prakriti Foundation facilitated a series of rigorous auditions across Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi in 2023, from which six dancers were selected: Divieta Sahajwala from Delhi, Sam Padelkar, Deep Das, and Sahan Kavarna from Mumbai, and Snigdha Prabakar and Chetan Kumar from Bengaluru.
This diverse ensemble has been tirelessly rehearsing under Merzouki’s direction, preparing to bring an infusion of freestyle, contemporary dance, and acrobatics to the stage—elements that embody Merzouki’s lauded hip-hop style. Describing the production’s musical score, Merzouki elaborated, “The score is an original work, a blend of poetic and energetic world music that serves as a synthesis of my artistic style.

Cartes Blanches is choreographed for 26 dancers and designed as an hour-long performance set in a living room adorned with period furniture. In this setting, artists share their collective and individual memories, contributing to a tapestry of movement and emotion. The production emphasizes the continuity of Compagnie Käfig’s past accomplishments while embracing new influences and themes.
Following its premiere in Bengaluru, Cartes Blanches is set to tour other cities, spreading its unique blend of French and Indian artistry.
