Chennai: In a significant development for Indian cinema, Kiran Rao’s “Laapataa Ladies” has been selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025, the Film Federation of India announced on Monday. The Hindi film, which serves as a light-hearted satire on patriarchy, edged out 28 other films to make the coveted shortlist. Competing against high-profile titles such as the Bollywood blockbuster “Animal”, the National Award-winning Malayalam film “Aattam”, and Cannes-winning film “All We Imagine As Light,” “Laapataa Ladies” emerged victorious in the selection process.
A 13-member select committee, led by Assamese director Jahnu Barua, “unanimously” decided on choosing “Laapataa Ladies,” which is produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, for consideration in the Best International Film category at the Academy Awards. The film was universally praised by critics upon its release in March and is distinguished by its heartwarming and empowering narrative. It tells the story of two brides in rural India in 2001 who accidentally get swapped during a train journey. With backing from Rao’s Kindling Productions, Aamir Khan Productions, and Jio Studios, the film has captured many hearts.
Primarily starring Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastav, along with Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam, and Geeta Aggarwal Sharma in significant roles, “Laapataa Ladies” had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. Since then, it has received widespread positive feedback which undoubtedly influenced its selection.
Besides “Laapataa Ladies”, other prominent films worth mentioning from the list include the Hindi film “Srikanth”, Tamil movies “Vaazhai” and “Thangalaan”, as well as the Malayalam film “Ullozhukku.” Collectively, these films represent the rich diversity and artistic expression prevalent in Indian cinema.
Noteworthy among the other films that were contenders for the Oscars entry were Tamil film “Maharaja,” Telugu titles “Kalki 2898 AD” and “Hanu-Man,” and Hindi films “Swatantraya Veer Savarkar” and “Article 370.” These films were also part of the robust list of 29 titles considered for the significant honor.

It’s essential to note that no Indian film has been nominated for the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars since the 2002 nomination of the Aamir Khan-starrer “Lagaan.” Before this, only two films, the Nargis-starring “Mother India” and Mira Nair’s “Salaam Bombay!”, had ever made it to the final five nominees, making Rao’s entry a potentially historical moment for Indian cinema. Last year, the Malayalam superhit “2018: Everyone is a Hero” was India’s entry, but it failed to secure a nomination.
The committee’s “unanimous” decision highlights the film’s potential for making a significant impact on an international stage. Rao’s adept handling of the theme and the narrative on women’s empowerment makes “Laapataa Ladies” a strong contender for the Oscar, adding to the buzz and anticipation surrounding its entry.
“Laapataa Ladies” continues to garner attention for its exploration of deeper socio-cultural issues via a comedic and satirical lens. The film’s plot revolves around the accidental swapping of two brides during a train journey in rural India in 2001, shedding light on the challenges women face within a patriarchal society.
The film’s ensemble cast, which includes the talents of Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastav, as well as acclaimed actors such as Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam, and Geeta Aggarwal Sharma, brings an additional layer of depth and versatility to the story. Its premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival laid the foundation for the international acclaim that followed.
The selection of “Laapataa Ladies” represents a step forward for Indian cinema on the world stage, showcasing the country’s ability to create thought-provoking and engaging narratives. It also signifies a potential resurgence in India’s presence at the Academy Awards, a presence that has been elusive since “Lagaan’s” success.
As the Oscar race heats up, “Laapataa Ladies” stands as a beacon of India’s cinematic excellence, with many hopeful that it will finally break the long-standing drought for Indian nominations at the Oscars. Fans and professionals in the film industry alike are eagerly awaiting the Academy’s response to this heartfelt and socially relevant film.
