Choreographers in the Spotlight: Sumesh Sundar and Jishnudas Shine in Amal Neerad’s ‘Bougainvillea’

The entertainment industry is abuzz with anticipation as Amal Neerad’s new film, “Bougainvillea,” prepares to hit the theaters on October 17. Touted as another cinematic marvel following “Bheeshma Parvam,” the film features the dynamic presence of Mammootty and showcases Neerad’s distinct narrative style. However, what truly sets this film apart are the innovative dance moves choreographed by Sumesh Sundar and Jishnudas. The duo, whose work became a sensation with the previous blockbuster “Bheeshma Parvam,” is once again capturing the limelight with their creativity and flair.

The promo song “Sthuthi,” featuring the charismatic Kunchacko Boban and the talented Jyothirmayi, has already created a storm on social media. Garnering over 2.5 million views, the track is a testament to the captivating choreography by Sumesh and Jishnudas. Interestingly, Jyothirmayi, the partner of director Amal Neerad, is no stranger to the dance floor. Her past performances in high-energy numbers like “Chingamaasam” from “Meesha Madhavan” and the seductive “Osama” from “Sagar Alias Jacky Reloaded” are still fondly remembered. Her performance in “Sthuthi” has drawn admiration, as she brings a novel touch with remarkable grace. “She has attempted something fresh with great flair,” remarks Sumesh, echoing the sentiment of many viewers.

When asked about the song, Jishnudas reflects, “When the song came to us, we never expected her to be one of the performers. Working with her was exciting.” “Sthuthi” is a blend of various dance styles, including hip-hop, house, whacking, and Afro, masterfully integrated to enhance the song’s dark ambiance. Despite not being an overtly fast track, the choreography includes intricate footwork, which Sumesh notes, “has been much appreciated.”

The fabulous Kunchacko Boban is highlighted as a key performer in “Sthuthi.” Known for his exceptional dance skills, he has been a favorite for the duo. After working with him on “Bheeshma Parvam,” they were excited to have another opportunity, thanks in part to Amal Neerad’s encouragement. Sumesh shares, “We had collaborated on a project with him before, but unfortunately, the song couldn’t be included in the final cut. Amal Ettan remembered us from that experience and later called us for ‘Sthuthi’.

Amal Neerad’s involvement extended beyond mere directorial duties. Known for his penchant for dance, he actively contributed by sharing relevant videos and references with the choreographers, ensuring that the dance sequences aligned perfectly with his vision. “He keeps track of new dance videos,” shares Sumesh. “He was pleased with our choreography, leaving us to skillfully guide Chackochan and Jyothirmayi through it.”

The synergy between music and movement in “Sthuthi” also owes much to composer Sushin Shyam, who, along with vocalist Mary Ann Alexander, brings life to Vinayak Sasikumar’s lyrics. Jishnudas admits, “Initially, the lyrics like ‘Karthavinu sthuthi’ posed a challenge for us in terms of choreography. But working with a director like Amal means delivering something extraordinary. We maintained the song’s energy with suitably paced moves.”

The song’s rehearsal process spanned over ten days, punctuated by dedication and creativity, as Kunchacko Boban even conducted rehearsals with a hand injury. The collaboration was seamless, thanks to the camaraderie among the team previously established on “Bheeshma Parvam” and strengthened through familiar artists and cinematographers like Anend C Chandran.

Sumesh Sundar and Jishnudas, with a deep-rooted friendship since their school days, navigate the world of dance with flair and innovation. They manage their dance studio, “Myself and My Moves,” based in Thrissur, a hub of creativity that began in 2016. The studio served as a training ground for many dancers featured in “Sthuthi.” Out of their team, 16 dancers graced the film with five more assisting. Their journey into cinema began when one of their many YouTube dance videos caught the attention of Amal Neerad, leading to their involvement in “Bheeshma Parvam” and the subsequent success.

Celebrated for his work, Jishnudas recently earned the Kerala State Film Award for Choreography for “Sulaikha Manzil.” Despite their growing list of achievements, the choreographers maintain a balance between their studio and film projects. Completing their work on an upcoming dance-oriented movie, the details of which remain under wraps, Sumesh and Jishnudas continue to be key figures in redefining dance in Indian cinema.

As “Bougainvillea” readies for release, the excitement surrounding “Sthuthi” is a testament to the brilliance of Sumesh Sundar and Jishnudas. Their groundbreaking choreography not only complements Amal Neerad’s directorial vision but also encapsulates the film’s dark, compelling narrative, widening the horizons for dance in Indian films.
