Anya Chalotra, renowned for her spellbinding portrayal of Yennefer in Netflix’s The Witcher, embarks on an exhilarating new adventure in the world of video games. Capturing the imagination of fans worldwide, she steps into the lead role of Haroona in the much-anticipated video game, Unknown 9: Awakening. Speaking from London via a lively video call, Anya shares her excitement, “The opportunity was presented, and I took it because I’ve always wanted to do motion capture.”
Haroona, the character Anya brings to life, is as complex as she is compelling. “She’s determined, passionate, and fiercely loyal,” Anya describes with enthusiasm. “Haroona has these incredible supernatural abilities. The game starts with her spiritually aware of possessing something extraordinary, but she’s unsure of how to access it. By the end, she learns to channel these powers fully, understanding their true potential and impact.”
Despite not having creative control over Haroona’s visual depiction, Anya explains, “My input is the fact that she’s based on my likeness. It’s been a collaboration, but I had no say in what she wore, her hair, or even her back story. Haroona’s story and the universe around her was already established, providing a rich foundation for the game.”
A day on set for a video game character, according to Anya, begins with donning a unique outfit. “You start by putting on a onesie. Dots are then placed all over, and my hair is tied up in a cap matching the color of the outfit. Velcro strips cover me,” she laughs while continuing, “I have a camera attached to my head, and I step into the ‘volume’—the space where all the magic happens.”
For Anya, acting in this setup bears resemblance to theatre experience. “It’s about finding the best version of truth in a scene through numerous takes with the team in the volume,” she notes. “The volume is a sensitive area. Cameras pick up on all the dots, and occasionally we have to pause to adjust them because they’re so sensitive.”
Performing lines within the volume, alongside additional recording in a booth, is part of Anya’s role—an experience she embraces as a bona fide gamer. “Oh, I can’t choose a favorite game! It’s got to be Unknown 9!” she says with a smile.
Playing Haroona marks a role reversal for Anya, from portraying Yennefer—a cherished figure in gaming lore. “The roles are worlds apart. The only commonality is their iconic statuses.
. I hope Haroona becomes as revered as Yennefer,” she remarks candidly.
Yennefer and Haroona, although both steeped in magic, diverge on personal journeys. Anya elaborates, “Yennefer lacks the familial weight that shapes Haroona. It’d be fascinating to see them face off. I’d love to witness that battle—I’d be playing against myself!”
Although modest about her role-selection, Anya hints at a semblance of choice following her rise to fame. “I do choose carefully, more so because playing Yennefer made me globally recognizable. The intermissions between The Witcher seasons are crucial for my growth as an actor.”
Currently filming Season Four of The Witcher amid an influx of changes—including Liam Hemsworth’s takeover as Geralt—Anya views the series as a ceaseless learning curve for Yennefer. “Each season, Yennefer evolves, aspiring to be a stronger leader and mother, absorbing lessons from her mentor, Tissaia,” she muses.
Anya’s ascent to her iconic role involved rigorous auditions. Trusting her instincts and collaborating with writers has guided her portrayal. “Loads of questions, no set answers,” she shares, highlighting her exploratory approach to character development.
Diverting her career trajectory, Anya expresses a desire to delve into horror and comedy, confident about her comedic chops. “I’m the family fool,” she quips. “Once more secure, I’ll venture into comedy.”
Her love for stage acting remains unwavering despite an accomplished repertoire spanning theatre, television, and gaming. “Theatre fulfills me. You’re in a space, raw and equal, stripped of pretense, exploring the text,” she enthuses.
Reflecting on her Indian heritage, Anya shares cherished memories of Hindi films, with a humorous nod to her fondness for Shah Rukh Khan movies. She’s open to Bollywood, humorously noting the familial entourage that would accompany her.
