GambleAware research suggests public support for UK affordability checks

Research orchestrated by Ispos in conjunction with GambleAware, drawing on a sample of 4,170 individuals aged between 18 and 75, sought to gauge public sentiment concerning the introduction of affordability checks proposed by the UK government’s white paper presented in April of the preceding year. These strategies intend to establish a gambling landscape wherein financial safeguards are implemented, specifically when a player incurs a loss of £1,000 within a single day or £2,000 across a span of 90 days. The concept extends to the institution of “passive” checks for players whose net losses exceed £125 monthly or £500 annually.

The concept of affordability checks has ignited a fervent discourse within the gaming industry, sparking a polarizing debate among stakeholders. Amidst this contentious dialogue, GambleAware has emerged as a vocal proponent of the proposed measures, with its most recent study revealing a significant portion of the public also aligning with their stance.

The survey unearthed that 61% of participants would advocate for the initiation of “light touch” financial checks aimed to detect patrons susceptible to financial vulnerability. Enhanced scrutiny, reserved for instances of alarmingly high financial losses, garnered the support of 57% of those surveyed. Particularly compelling was the response from individuals grappling with gambling problems, with 58% favoring the more stringent, enhanced checks, and a slightly lesser 54% voicing approval for the light touch approach.

A prevailing expectation among the majority of adults is for operators to intercede or establish contact in scenarios where a consumer fails to pass these affordability checks. “As we continue to see a steady rise in demand for support and treatment services, we are urging the government to ensure there are no missed opportunities when it comes to the instruction of robust preventative measures to tackle this rapidly growing public health issue,” emphasized Zoë Osmond, CEO of GambleAware.

Osmond elaborated on the necessity of preemptive measures, highlighting the importance of education, widespread awareness initiatives, and fortified regulations aimed at protecting vulnerable groups. The GambleAware CEO asserted the industry’s accountability in sheltering individuals from unsustainable losses, which she believes is paramount to mitigating the adverse effects of problem gambling on both individuals and society.

Despite the supportive data, the research also signaled prevailing apprehensions regarding privacy and the efficacy of the proposed checks. The privacy concerns stem from an undercurrent of skepticism, with some respondents branding such measures as intrusive. Further uncertainties include identifying the precise threshold of losses that should activate the checks, with two in five adults expressing indecision over the matter. Analysis of gambling behavior over the past 12 months indicated that only 10% would be impacted by light touch checks, decreasing to 5% for enhanced checks.

Remarkably, about one-third of respondents who had gambled in the last year did so offline, thus evading detection by the proposed online-centric checks. These issues are reflective of similar concerns highlighted by iGB in an exclusive piece last month.

Opponents of the checks also question the realism of the proposed loss limits, arguing that the stipulated amounts are considerably low for numerous gamblers, making it unjust to subject them to such scrutiny. There is also trepidation surrounding the feasibility of conducting in-depth assessments during high-profile sports events given the surge in active bettors during these periods.

Other criticisms include the potential risk of these measures driving players towards unlicensed sites that circumvent regulated checks, sacrificing the protections offered by licensed operators.

The debate over the recommended affordability checks, therefore, rages on, with stakeholders dissecting every facet of these pivotal industry changes and their implications on both consumer protection and operational practicality.
