Jontay Porter, a once-promising NBA player, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud amid a betting scandal that has rocked the basketball community. Federal prosecutors are recommending a prison sentence of 41 to 51 months, and Porter is facing over $450,000 in fines and fees. This recommendation comes after Porter was released on a $250,000 bond, put up by his wife and mother, according to the New York Post.
The scandal has led NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to impose a lifetime ban on Porter from the league, a decision made public in April. This came after it was revealed that Porter had potentially violated the league’s wagering rules by tampering with games to benefit his co-conspirators. While NBA players are permitted to gamble, they are strictly prohibited from betting on basketball games and from participating in any game-fixing activities. Porter is the first NBA player to receive such a severe penalty for betting violations since the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was overturned in 2018.
Details of the federal affidavit, filed in June, indicate that Porter conspired with others to manipulate the outcomes of two specific games. To ensure his co-conspirators won their bets, Porter deliberately left these games early – a tactic that drastically affected the game’s dynamics. These bets were placed on legal sportsbooks by men to whom Porter was indebted. The tampered games took place on January 26th and March 22nd, and the manipulation led to the conspirators winning over $1 million in flagged bets.
