Adil Hussain Lauds Janhvi Kapoor’s Remarkable Focus in Ulajh

In a candid conversation about his latest film, Ulajh, actor Adil Hussain opened up with a disclaimer that he is contractually restricted from divulging details about the plot. “Every twist matters,” Hussain explained, underscoring the carefully guarded intricacies of the storyline. Directed by Sudhanshu Saria, Ulajh drew Hussain’s interest due to its unique blend of complex relationships set against the backdrop of a gripping spy thriller. The film follows the bravery of a young woman determined to defend her country’s honor, a narrative that eschews outright jingoism. “Sudhanshu and I were supposed to collaborate earlier, but it didn’t pan out,” Hussain recalled. “When he approached me with this project, I immediately said yes.”

Starring Janhvi Kapoor in the lead role, Ulajh also features Gulshan Devaiah, Roshan Mathew, and Rajesh Tailang. Hussain was particularly impressed by Kapoor’s performance, attributing her on-set demeanor to certain qualities reminiscent of her late mother, the legendary Sridevi. “She inherently possesses some steadfast qualities of an artiste. A film set is daunting. Janhvi has sharp concentration. I had seen that in Sridevi when I worked with her in ‘English Vinglish’ (2012), and I saw glimpses of that very spirit in Janhvi. She has the willingness to be in the moment, deliver what’s needed by the director, and is mindful of the film’s best interest,” he noted.

Hussain splits his time between Delhi and various movie industries, from Malayalam to Khasi and Norwegian cinema, aiming to select projects that genuinely captivate him. “I don’t have a publicist or an agent; the scripts are chosen by me. My budget might be higher than what they can offer. But if a film artistically appeals to me, I try to accommodate it,” he explained. His vision is to see an India where artistic and commercial interests in filmmaking are harmoniously aligned.

Continuing his mission to balance artistic integrity and commercial viability, Hussain will next grace the screen in Blue 52, directed by Egyptian auteur Ali El Arabi and co-starring Neha Dhupia.

. The film tells the story of a 22-year-old Indian soccer enthusiast who escapes his overbearing father to attend the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. For Hussain, Blue 52 symbolizes something profoundly relevant to our times. “People are being killed in thousands, and the world is watching them die. At such a time, it’s necessary that we watch films coming out of conflict areas [as they] evoke empathy,” he asserted. To expand his understanding, Hussain regularly engages with global cinema from Iran, Russia, and Japan, appreciating the diverse perspectives they offer. “We need to stop telling binary stories of heroes and villains. We need more movies with an understanding of human beings, ones that help us understand the ‘other’ better.”

As both a seasoned actor and a reflective individual, Hussain’s insights offer a compelling glimpse into his professional ethos and worldview. His admiration for Janhvi Kapoor extends beyond mere professional praise, as he genuinely believes she inherited the same commitment to excellence that made Sridevi an iconic figure in Indian cinema. “A film set is daunting. Janhvi has sharp concentration,” said Hussain, accentuating the young actress’s ability to stay present and meet the director’s vision.

Hussain’s approach to selecting films is notably deliberate. He emphasizes quality and meaningful storytelling over financial gain or widespread recognition. “I envision an India, where a film’s artistic interests match its commercial interests,” he shared, highlighting his desire for a balanced cinematic landscape. This perspective is reflected in his choice to participate in Blue 52, a film that delves into the nuanced and often turbulent human experiences in politically charged environments.

By dedicating himself to projects that resonate on an artistic level, Hussain continues to shape a varied and impactful career. His contributions span multiple languages and industries, each role chosen for its potential to provoke thought and foster understanding. Ulajh is poised to add another significant chapter to this ongoing narrative, showcasing both Hussain’s seasoned talent and Janhvi Kapoor’s burgeoning skill set. Through films like these, Hussain not only entertains but also opens windows to diverse human experiences, reminding audiences of cinema’s profound potential to enlighten and connect.
