‘Art and the Now’ Exhibition Brings Kolkata’s Vibrant Art Scene to Bengaluru

Bengaluru’s art aficionados are in for a treat this season as Gallery Time and Space is showcasing “Art and the Now,” an exhibition in collaboration with the esteemed Society of Contemporary Artists (SCA), Kolkata. The exhibition is notably curated by the dedicated team led by Renu George and features the imaginative expressions of approximately 20 artists, all of whom hold membership in the Society of Contemporary Artists, Kolkata.

Established in 1960, the Society of Contemporary Artists boasts foundational members such as Shyamal Dutta Ray, Sanat Kar, and Nikhil Biswas—stalwarts of the Bengal Contemporary School of Art. Over the decades, the SCA has become a nurturing ground for talented individuals in the region’s art community. This exhibition, as Renu George enthusiastically notes, marks their 65th anniversary and represents a significant milestone in their journey.

“What makes this exhibition special is the distinct style each artist brings to the table, demonstrating their prowess and unique conceptual approaches. It’s an effort to transport a slice of Kolkata’s lively art scene to Bengaluru,” says Renu George. The exhibition showcases an assortment of over 40 artworks, including drawings, paintings, and sculptures rendered in various media.

Among the stunning array of art on display is a sculpture by Bimal Kundu, adding to the eclectic mix of genres and forms. “Every artist featured in ‘Art and the Now’ is deserving of individual attention, each contributing their original perspectives and temperaments,” Renu affirms.

Akhil Chandra Das, a significant contributor to this exhibition and a member of SCA since 2016, shares his excitement and honour about being part of such a revered community. “Being inducted into the ranks of SCA, alongside some of Kolkata’s most distinguished artists, is an unparalleled privilege. It’s not just about showcasing my work; it’s about contributing to a legacy,” says Akhil. Acknowledged both nationally and internationally for his artistic achievements, Akhil is presenting four pieces at the exhibition, namely “Durga,” “The Monk,” “Shelter,” and “Mask.” These pieces draw inspiration from daily life, resonating deeply with the viewers by encapsulating familiar scenarios and individuals.

“Art and the Now” also features an impressive variety of artistic mediums: from watercolours and oil on canvas to abstract and speculative works. The exhibition includes several sculptural forms crafted from materials like wood and ceramics, broadening its artistic diversity.

The exhibition offers viewers an expansive look into both the individual talent and collective ethos of SCA. Founded out of a desire to create a supportive and progressive space for artists, the SCA has consistently championed innovation and artistic excellence.

Over the years, the Society has remained steadfast in its commitment to fostering creativity and has emerged as a key player in the Indian contemporary art scene. Their continuous endeavour to spotlight artist’s unique voices while maintaining a cohesive artistic identity is truly commendable, and “Art and the Now” is a testament to this mission.

The art pieces display a vivid spectrum of influences and inspirations. For instance, some of the abstract works probe deeper into the nuances of human emotions and existential themes, providing viewers with a profound reflective experience. The watercolours and oil on canvas pieces offer a more traditional yet invigorating glimpse into Kolkata’s cultural and historical tableau. Meanwhile, the sculptural works bring a three-dimensional dynamism that both captures and challenges the viewer’s imagination.

“Art and the Now” serves not just as an exhibition but as a cultural bridge between two of India’s most vibrant cities. By bringing Kolkata’s rich artistic tradition to the forefront in Bengaluru, the curators and participating artists are fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of diverse artistic expressions within India.

The exhibition is scheduled to run until September 8 at Gallery Time and Space, located in the heart of Bengaluru. Entry is free, thus encouraging art lovers, students, and the general public to immerse themselves in this captivating display.

Art enthusiasts are urged not to miss this opportunity to engage with some of the finest contemporary art that India has to offer. “Art and the Now” promises not only to elevate the art landscape in Bengaluru but also to leave a lasting impression on everyone who walks through the gallery doors.
