Avinash Tiwary’s cinematic journey has been anything but conventional, and he’s currently experiencing a phenomenon few actors get to relish: the re-release of his debut film, Laila Majnu. Initially failing to make a mark on its 2018 release, the love story, also featuring Triptii Dimri and directed by Sajid Ali, has found renewed life and adoration from audiences in its second run.
The re-release has been nothing short of astonishing. Tiwary recounts a remark from director Sajid Ali, reflecting on the stark contrast between the film’s initial and current reception: “Sajid Ali mentioned that the last time he went to a theatre, there were only seven people watching Laila Majnu. Today, there are housefull boards running across theatres,” Tiwary said with a triumphant smile.
The film, once available mainly on OTT platforms and YouTube, has seen renewed interest that has driven audiences back to the cinema halls in droves. Tiwary expressed his amazement at this resurgence, stating, “I have been told people don’t go to cinemas today, and then to see people flocking to theatres [for Laila Majnu] is magical. This has happened due to public demand. People called for it, and when the opportunity came, went all out to show their love.” Remarkably, the re-release’s box office collection has already surpassed the earnings from the film’s original release within just four days.
Tiwary believes that this magical resurgence emphasizes the need to create art for its enduring value rather than immediate commercial success. “We’ll hopefully inspire people to look at art for longevity, and not as a trade market. Today, we try to lure and manipulate audiences, but if we value their love, we should be honest with them,” he said. This honesty, he hopes, will become a guiding principle not just for him but for the industry at large.
Looking forward, Avinash Tiwary has an array of promising projects lined up. He will soon be seen in Boman Irani’s directorial debut, The Mehta Boys, and in Sikandar Ka Muqaddar, directed by Neeraj Pandey. Sharing insights on these upcoming ventures, Tiwary elaborates, “The Mehta Boys is written by Alexander Dinelaris Jr, who was one of the four people who won the Oscar for Best Screenplay for Birdman [2014]. It’s a father-son story. It’s set to première at a big film festival soon.
. Sikandar Ka Muqaddar is a heist thriller. Neeraj Pandey has been a showrunner before, but this is the first time he is directing an OTT film.”
The actor discussed the unique aspects of each project, highlighting the significance of collaborating with industry veterans like Boman Irani and Neeraj Pandey. “Working with talents like Boman Irani and Neeraj Pandey is an enriching experience. They bring so much depth and nuance to their projects, something that truly aligns with my own vision for honest storytelling,” Tiwary stated.
In response to his growing fanbase, who are eagerly awaiting to see him in another romantic role, Tiwary shared his inclination towards love stories imbued with a unique charm. “I’d love to do romantic movies. But I would want them to have something special; I want to avoid template romantic films,” he said. His discerning taste in choosing roles seems parallel to his belief in creating lasting art.
Avinash Tiwary’s journey provides a powerful lesson in resilience and the impact of honest storytelling. The renewed success of Laila Majnu serves as a testament to the potential of art to connect deeply with audiences, even years after its initial release. As he embarks on new projects, his commitment to authenticity remains unwavering, promising a career marked by works of genuine emotional and artistic value.
Reflecting on the journey so far, Tiwary acknowledged the role of audience love and support in shaping an actor’s trajectory. “Fame is fleeting, but genuine connections with the audience can sustain an actor’s career. I am grateful for the love shown by the audience—it gives me the drive to keep pursuing meaningful stories,” he concluded.
Avinash Tiwary’s career is only set to ascend from here, with the re-release of Laila Majnu reigniting interest in his past work and building substantial anticipation for his future projects. His steadfast belief in the timeless value of art serves as an inspiration for other creators in the industry. As Tiwary continues to forge his path, one can only expect more compelling performances and projects that stand the test of time.
