The excitement surrounding Coldplay’s upcoming concert in Mumbai has turned into a saga of frustration for thousands of Indian fans. Set for January 2025, the event has left many eagerly awaiting fans without tickets. The phenomenon unfolded in a matter of minutes on ticketing platform BookMyShow, with countless aficionados taking to social media to express their disappointment and anger.
Originally, the globally acclaimed band announced two concerts in Mumbai. However, tickets for both events sold out within minutes, prompting the band to announce an additional third show. Unfortunately, the third show also faced the same fate, with tickets disappearing almost instantly.
Jay, a 23-year-old student from Hyderabad, was among the many enthusiasts who scrambled to secure tickets as soon as sales began at 12 p.m. As he eagerly joined the booking queue on BookMyShow, his queue number displayed a staggering 10,67,672 (10.6 lakh). Despite his hopes rising as his position in the queue advanced to around 50,000 rapidly, his excitement turned to dismay when he was met with a ‘Sold Out’ message. Jay’s frustrating experience is representative of thousands of others across India who faced the same fate.
Ramya, a corporate employee from Hyderabad, shared a similarly exasperating experience. Joining the queue at position 9,80,135, she saw her chances improving steadily. “Within minutes, I reached 20,000 and thought I had a real shot,” she recounted. “But suddenly, BookMyShow kicked me out, and by the time I logged back in, all tickets were gone.” Ramya’s story echoes the widespread sense of disenchantment among fans who felt they were on the cusp of securing tickets only to have their hopes dashed abruptly.
Rahul Boine, a tax consultant, provided another account of dashed hopes. “I started at nearly nine lakh in the queue and painfully worked my way down to 44,000, but still no luck.
. Some of my friends managed to reach queue positions as low as 250 and they still couldn’t get tickets,” he explained. The overwhelming demand and the speed at which tickets were snapped up have left countless fans feeling disheartened.
Adding insult to injury, many tickets have quickly appeared on resale platforms at exorbitant prices. According to Ramya, tickets that were originally priced at ₹6,500 are now being resold for a staggering ₹80,000. Similarly, tickets that were initially ₹35,000 are being listed for ₹1.8 lakh. “It’s heartbreaking, especially for fans who put in so much effort to bring Coldplay to Mumbai by participating in numerous surveys, only to see tickets now being resold for unethical profits,” she lamented.
The situation was further elucidated by Fayaz, an intern at a prominent law firm, who observed similar cases among his peers. “A friend of mine who managed to get a ₹12,500 ticket is now looking to sell it for ₹1 lakh, while another is selling a ₹6,500 ticket for ₹40,000,” he shared. The inflated resale prices not only underscore the rampant profiteering but also the acute demand for tickets among die-hard fans.
The fans’ collective frustration has sparked broader discussions about the practices surrounding ticket sales and the challenges faced by genuine fans in securing tickets. Many are calling for stricter regulations and measures to prevent such instances of scalping and ensure a fairer ticket distribution process. In addition, some are urging platforms like BookMyShow to improve their systems to cope with such high demand and minimize the chances of technical glitches that exacerbate the problem.
Despite the overwhelming sense of disappointment, the anticipation for Coldplay’s Mumbai concerts remains high. Fans are holding onto hope for additional shows or perhaps more opportunities to get their hands on the elusive tickets. In the meantime, the debate around fair ticketing practices and the ongoing struggle against resale exploitation continues to be a hot topic among the disheartened populace.
As January 2025 approaches, one thing is clear: the Coldplay concerts in Mumbai have spotlighted both the incredible enthusiasm of Indian fans and the systemic issues that need addressing in the world of live event ticketing. Whether or not solutions will be implemented in time remains to be seen, but the fans’ voices have undeniably made a significant impact.
