The timeless and beloved tale of Aladdin, a classic Disney saga cherished in numerous forms—from comics and books to cartoons, live-action movies, and even video games—continues to captivate audiences worldwide with its enchanting narrative. This unforgettable story of a humble thief who transforms his fate and wins the heart of Princess Jasmine is now set to dazzle live audiences in an upcoming theatrical production.
The upcoming stage adaptation, presented by Union Christian Public School and Union Christian Matriculation Higher Secondary School, promises to be a visual and auditory spectacle. Directed by acclaimed Chennai-based director and actor Michael Muthu, the production will come alive at the historic Museum Theatre, Egmore. Muthu, sharing his insights into the play, expressed, “We chose Aladdin because the children loved the theme, and we embarked on rehearsals a few months ago. It’s a significant production involving over 100 participants, including actors, singers, and crew members.”
One of the noteworthy challenges of this ambitious endeavor, according to Muthu, was that many involved were making their debut on the stage. For most cast members and crew, this opportunity marked their first encounter with the world of theater. To ensure that the production ran smoothly without overwhelming the participants, the crew was strategically divided into 21 departments, focusing on various aspects like set design, lighting, props, music, costumes, and projections. “This is arguably one of the most challenging plays I have directed due to its technical complexities. I had to orchestrate a scene where the genie enters a lamp, complete with several special effects,” Muthu remarked. As for whether spectators will witness a magical carpet flitting across the stage, the audience must wait to see the theatrical wonders unfold.

In preparation for this Arabian Nights adventure, Muthu joined forces with choir master Ebenezer Arunkumar to perfect the Disney melodies, while dance mentor John Britto infused the production with energetic choreography. Rehearsals were initially conducted separately for the dancers, singers, and actors. As Muthu explained, “Two weeks prior, we began integrating these elements, and the entire production started to harmonize beautifully. We tackled character development head-on to ensure each actor embodied the essence of their role convincingly.”
The grandeur of the production is further elevated with scenes unfolding across nine distinct set locations, each requiring precise coordination as various set elements transition smoothly in and out during performances. “I have a spacious backstage area, and all team members need to function seamlessly, akin to a well-oiled machine, to guarantee the show’s success,” Muthu elucidated.
Stressing the significance of arts in society, Muthu observed, “The arts act as a barometer for gauging a society’s progressiveness. Society thrives and prospers when it embraces artistic expression, which also plays a pivotal role in boosting students’ confidence and equipping them with new skills.”
For those eager to immerse themselves in Aladdin’s magical universe, performances are scheduled at The Museum Theatre, Egmore, on October 26, 27, and 28 at 7 p.m. Ticket prices commence at ₹300, and interested parties can find more details or book by reaching out at 9789291513 or 9789291683.
