Bengali filmmaker Arindam Sil has been thrust into the spotlight after the Directors’ Association of Eastern India (DAEI) suspended him in response to sexual misconduct allegations levied by an actress. Known as the first significant figure in the Bengali film industry, also known as Tollywood, to face action amidst rising allegations of sexual harassment, Sil’s case has sent ripples through the entertainment sector.
The suspension was enacted immediately according to a letter from DAEI, received late Saturday. “Due to certain allegations made against you, and prima facie evidence we have with us, which are of deep concern and is maligning to the entire organisation, DAEI has decided to suspend you from membership for indefinite period or till the allegations against you are cleared,” stated the letter signed by President Subrata Sen and Secretary Sudeshna Roy.
Arindam Sil, who is also a respected actor, defended himself, asserting that the incident in question was a misunderstanding. He recounted the episode to reporters, explaining that it occurred while he was directing a scene involving the actress. “What was being construed as misbehavior was completely unintentional,” he claimed. According to him, no objections were raised at the time of the incident.
The DAEI’s involvement began after the actress filed an official complaint with the West Bengal Commission for Women. Following this, Sil received a letter from the commission seeking his response to the allegations. In his reply, Sil expressed an apology, yet maintained that his actions were not malicious. In subsequent statements to the media, Sil emphasized that individuals present during the filming would vouch for his claim of the event being unintended.
“I always explain scenes to my actors and actresses before taking a shot. After the particular incident, the actress concerned willingly took part in the shoot for four more hours,” Sil added, lamenting the swiftness of his suspension before he had the opportunity to present his side to the DAEI.

DAEI Secretary Sudeshna Roy highlighted that the association conducted a thorough consideration of all sides involved before arriving at their decision. “The merit in the complaint could not be overlooked,” she confirmed, underscoring the commitment to a fair and detailed review process in such serious matters.
The accused actress, in a conversation with NEWS18 Bangla, also conveyed her faith in the fairness of the commission. “Let me ask him why one has to be physical to explain a shot. We are all professional actors. The rest I will state before the commission whenever needed in the future,” she resolutely stated, illustrating her confidence in following due process.
Arindam Sil, famed for his detective film series such as ‘Har Har Byomkesh’, ‘Mitin Mashi’, and the ‘Shabor’ series, now finds his career hanging in the balance due to these allegations. Although he has been a prominent figure working on notable projects in Bengali cinema, this episode shows that no individual, regardless of their stature, is above the scrutiny of ethical standards.
