Humble Reflections from Punjabi Star Diljit Dosanjh Post-Coachella Milestone

In a remarkable twist of destiny, the year 2023 has seen Indian entertainer Diljit Dosanjh etch his name in music history as the first artist from the Punjabi music scene to grace the stage at Coachella, the acclaimed Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Despite this trailblazing achievement, Dosanjh candidly addresses his self-doubts about his own musical abilities. Specializing not only in music but also in acting, he is currently in the throes of anticipation for the release of his film ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’.

During a heartfelt discussion on The Ranveer Show, Dosanjh shared his viewpoint on his presence at the prestigious Coachella festival. Although the opportunity to perform was one he had marked on his checklist, Dosanjh expressed that being chosen wasn’t a dream come true because he never saw himself as a “deserving candidate.” He rationalized that his Coachella milestone was a manifestation of divine will and acknowledged the event’s significance, especially considering it was a first for an Indian national. “It was a huge deal,” Dosanjh articulated with humility.

Reflecting on the broader spectrum of his career, Dosanjh admitted to feeling like an ordinary musician who happens to stumble upon great opportunities. He pointed out that despite lacking formal training in acting, he finds himself in the company of acclaimed filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, preparing for his “Amar Singh Chamkila” role. This collaboration is something he had never envisioned for himself. “Maybe it happened because of Chamkila,” he speculated, attributing his chance to the influential folk singer he is about to portray.

Dosanjh’s Coachella debut in the previous year featured a memorable 45-minute set on the festival’s second day. Clad in traditional Punjabi black attire, he delivered vivacious performances of fan favorites like ‘G.O.A.T.’, ‘Patiala Peg’, and ‘Lemonade’. From the Coachella stage, he proudly exclaimed in Punjabi, “Punjabi aa gaye hun Coachella (Punjabis have reached Coachella).” For those unacquainted with the language of his songs, he encouraged them to embrace the energy and rhythm.

Regarding his role in ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’, Dosanjh spoke of his reliance on Imtiaz Ali’s distinct vision to resurrect the legendary musician on film. Chamkila, a revered figure in the Punjab music landscape of the ’80s, was tragically slain alongside his singer-wife Amarjot in 1988. Taking on such a complex character, Dosanjh acknowledged the necessity of shedding his own identity, a challenge, but also an invigorating fresh start for any artist. He appreciated the process as an opportunity bestowed upon him.

Dosanjh confessed that his preparations for the role were minimal compared to Ali’s extensive groundwork. Despite a personal familiarity with Chamkila’s artistry, Dosanjh had yet to comprehend the full depth of Chamkila’s persona and stage craft. The guidance and clarity provided by Ali were instrumental in bringing Chamkila’s character to life for Dosanjh, who was determined to do justice to the celebrated iconic singer.

Dosanjh’s narratives offer a glimpse into the psyche of an artist thriving in fields where formal training hasn’t been the cornerstone of his success. His presence at Coachella represents a cultural milestone and highlights the reach of Punjabi music on the global stage. Influenced by a legacy that’s both joyful and wrought with tragedy, as seen through the life of Amar Singh Chamkila, Dosanjh continues to navigate his career with a mix of fortitude and unexpected humility, resonating with audiences both at home and abroad.
