This unsung hero is none other than Dr. Upendranath Brahmachari, a leading doctor and scientist in Bengal during the early 20th century. Born to a father who was a physician, Brahmachari’s academic journey began at prestigious institutions like Presidency College and the University of Calcutta. He initially graduated with a degree in mathematics and chemistry but soon found his calling in the field of medicine and surgery. By 1902, he had earned his MD, followed by a PhD in 1904.
Dr. Brahmachari began his medical career at the Dhaka Medical School and later joined the Campbell Medical School in Calcutta. During his professional tenure, he took up the daunting challenge of finding a cure for a deadly disease known as kala-azar or black fever—a fatal parasitic epidemic that had claimed millions of lives across various countries. The disease would darken a person’s skin and aggressively target vital organs such as the liver and spleen, often leading to death in the absence of treatment.
Driven by a deep-seated passion for finding a cure, Dr. Brahmachari dedicated 20 years of his life to this mission. Working in less-than-ideal conditions, with no electricity and poor water supply, he discovered Urea Stibamine in 1920. This miracle drug brought about a phenomenal change in the battle against black fever, shifting the mortality rate from a staggering 90% to a 90% success rate for those treated with the drug.
Beyond discovering the cure, Dr. Brahmachari ensured that his life-saving medicine was accessible to those who needed it most. He made sure that many hospitals received the medication for free, a humanitarian gesture that predated the discovery of penicillin and showcased his commitment to public health.
Dr. Brahmachari’s contributions did not stop at combating kala-azar.

He was nominated for the prestigious Nobel Prize not once, but six times—once in 1929 alongside the renowned Sigmund Freud, and five times in 1942. However, he never won the esteemed award.
The reasons for his repeated overlook by the Nobel Committee remain a subject of speculation. Some historians and scholars suspect that his ethnicity may have played a significant role in his exclusion from the Nobel laureates. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Dr. Brahmachari was never inducted into elite scientific institutions such as the Royal Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Allegedly, a defamation campaign hindered his acceptance into the Royal Society, further isolating him from the international scientific community.
Today, Dr. Upendranath Brahmachari’s legacy continues to inspire many in the field of medicine and beyond.
