In a recent promotional event for her latest film, Emergency, Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut disclosed that she had rejected some significant movie offers from fellow actor Akshay Kumar. This revelation adds another chapter to the actress’s history of turning down roles with big Bollywood stars and directors, a pattern she attributes to her adherence to personal values and integrity.
Kangana Ranaut, known for her outspoken nature and bold choices, shared that she had declined a role in the film Singh Is Bliing, which was eventually given to Amy Jackson. Explaining her decision, she stated that the role did not align with her principles, particularly regarding the portrayal of women. Speaking to NBT, Kangana revealed an enlightening conversation with Akshay Kumar on this matter.
“Akshay Kumar called me for ‘Singh Is Bliing’. Then he called me again for a couple of films. He finally asked, ‘Do you have a problem with me, Kangana?’ I said, ‘Sir, I really don’t have a problem with you.’ He continued, ‘Then why? I am giving you such good roles.’ I responded, ‘Please understand, you also have a daughter. We want integrity for women’,” Kangana recounted. This exchange underscores Kangana’s steadfast commitment to choosing roles that, in her view, respect and uplift women.
Kangana’s string of controversies does not end with her film choices. She recently received death threats associated with her upcoming film Emergency and her statements on the farmers’ protest. These controversies have necessitated heightened security measures for the actress, as she travels under heavy protection. A sighting at Mumbai airport showed Kangana dressed elegantly in a white and pink floral saree, accompanied by sunglasses and a luxury handbag, as she embarked on her journey under the watchful eyes of security personnel.
A viral video recently shared by Kangana showcased an alarming threat by two men, warning her of dire consequences if she proceeded with the release of Emergency, which allegedly depicts the Sikh community in a negative light. Punjabi influencer Viky Thomas Singh, in the video, stated, “History cannot be changed.
. If they portray Sikhs as terrorists in the film, then remember what happened to the person the movie is about. Remember who Satwant Singh and Beant Singh were. Those who point a finger at us, we break that very finger… If we can sacrifice our heads, we can also behead you.” In light of these threats, Kangana sought police assistance for her protection.
The film Emergency has stirred a significant backlash from the Sikh community, escalating tensions further. The Akhal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs, along with the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), have called for an immediate ban on the film. SGPC Chief Harjinder Singh Dhami, during a press conference, demanded the registration of an FIR against Kangana. Dhami criticized the film, stating that it attempts to “character assassinate” Sikhs and highlighted the unforgotten atrocities faced by the community in June 1984. He accused the film of tarnishing the image of Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale, who holds the revered title of Qaumi Shaheed (community’s martyr) as declared by Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
While the storm of controversies continues to whirl around her, Kangana Ranaut remains focused on promoting Emergency and advocating for the integrity and respect of women in Bollywood. Her recent experiences underscore the challenges faced by public figures who dare to take a stand and choose roles that align with their values, all while navigating the often-turbulent waters of the film industry.
The debate surrounding Emergency and Kangana’s film choices reflects broader societal questions about portrayal, respect, and the role of women in media. As the conversation unfolds, Kangana’s stance may either inspire others in the industry to make similar principled stands or further polarize opinions within the community. Regardless, Kangana Ranaut remains a prominent figure in Bollywood, whose actions continue to spark dialogue and reflection.
