Filmmaker Karan Johar recently turned to social media to share a series of snapshots and memories from his film “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil,” a project he describes as deeply personal. On Friday, Johar posted on Instagram a heartfelt message accompanied by photos from the shooting days featuring prominent Bollywood stars Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai and Anushka Sharma, as well as himself behind the scenes.
The note read with poignant recollection, “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil will always be personal to me. It was all my life learnings about falling in love, dealing with unrequited love, and also how resilient we can be even when the heartbreak feels so final. The experience of filming ADHM was one of my best on-set experiences.”
In his post, Johar delved further into the making of the film, revealing his profound admiration for the “Ranbir process.” He explained how Kapoor’s dedication to his art never showed the meticulous effort behind it. Johar got to know and love him not just as an artist but also as a person, appreciating his detachment from the trappings of stardom. Kapoor’s performance as a brokenhearted lover, according to Johar, transcended the written script.
Anushka Sharma, who starred alongside Kapoor, was also a source of joy for Johar to direct. He highlighted their genuine off-screen friendship and respect, an alchemy that effortlessly translated onto the screen. Johar lauded Sharma for her purity of heart, which never failed to resonate with audiences through her performance.
Further expressing gratitude, Karan Johar extended his thanks to the musical talents behind the film, composer Pritam and lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya. He credited them for the unforgettable music that accompanied “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil,” adding another layer to its enduring legacy.
One of Johar’s long-held desires was to direct Aishwarya Rai, and in this film, he had the opportunity to do so. He commended her for bringing grace, dignity, and beauty to her character, Saba. Her immediate acceptance of the role and her collaborative spirit left a lasting impression on the director.
“Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” marked Karan Johar’s return to the director’s chair in 2016 after a hiatus of four years. The film featured Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, and Aishwarya Rai in the lead roles and included notable guest appearances from Shah Rukh Khan, Alia Bhatt, Lisa Haydon, and Pakistani actor Fawad Khan.
The film achieved considerable success at the box office and its music continues to be celebrated six years after its release. Johar reminisces about the filmmaking process with fondness and a touch of catharsis, “I look back at the days of filming ADHM with a big smile and a cathartic heart.”
Karan Johar’s upcoming project is the sports drama ‘Mr and Mrs Mahi,’ featuring Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, set to premiere on May 31. He is currently preparing for its release, bringing yet another story to life on the silver screen.
Johar’s Instagram post served as a tribute to “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” and to the craft of filmmaking itself, capturing the nuanced experiences and collaborations that create the magic of cinema. With his trademark passion, the director shared this reflective journey with his fans and followers, allowing them a glimpse into the world of filmmaking that is, at once, both personal and universal.
