Kolkata’s Nikita Agarwal Brings Vivid Varanasi to Bengaluru’s Art Scene

Kolkata-based artist, Nikita Agarwal, is set to make her mark in Bengaluru with her solo exhibition titled “Ripples of Reflection.” The much-anticipated showcase will feature a series of evocative acrylic paintings on canvas, complemented by a selection of works in charcoal. Art lovers can look forward to experiencing her vibrant masterpieces at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath starting June 6.

Nikita’s paintings capture the picturesque and spiritual essence of Varanasi, known as one of India’s most iconic temple cities. This exhibition marks her debut solo show in Bengaluru, although she is no stranger to the art circuit, having previously participated in exhibitions in Kolkata and New Delhi. A self-taught artist, Nikita reflects on how her explorations of Varanasi have deeply influenced her creative journey.

Nikita hopes that her art will convey a sense of solace and tranquility to viewers, inspired by Varanasi’s rich spiritual heritage. “I chose Varanasi because the city delves into the soul,” she shares. “Every ghat serves as a portal to the world, where spirituality, history, and culture intersect.” These themes are evident in her work, with bold brushstrokes and a vibrant color palette capturing the vibrancy of Varanasi’s ghats.

Rich blues, oranges, and purples dominate her canvases, infusing life into the weathered ghats. Saffron-clad sadhus, marigold offerings, and the banks of the Ganges become a celebration of Varanasi’s harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. Notably, the cremation ghat, Manikarnika Ghat, serves as a significant inspiration for Nikita’s work. “It is a holy place, and my artwork invites you to witness the city’s enduring beauty,” she elaborates.

Agarwal’s connection to Kolkata runs deep, attributing much of her artistic growth to the city’s vibrant culture and artistic community. “I have learned and evolved with Kolkata. It’s a place where I feel I am meant to be. The diverse art and cultural exposure here, alongside collaborations with various artists, have profoundly shaped who I am today,” she says.

In addition to “Ripples of Reflection,” the exhibition will feature select paintings from Nikita’s “Divine Series.” Also inspired by Varanasi, this series includes standout pieces depicting sadhus and a majestic Nandi, capturing the themes of patience and eternal anticipation.

Describing her journey as an artist, Nikita finds immense joy in her craft. “Being an artist is a celebration. While there are pros and cons to this path, I have predominantly experienced the positives. Art has bolstered my confidence as an individual, bringing recognition and motivating me to create more.”

The “Ripples of Reflection” exhibition promises to be a visual treat for art connoisseurs in Bengaluru. Running from June 6 to 10, the artworks will be displayed at Chitrakala Parishath’s Gallery Number 3, open to the public between 11 am and 7 pm.
