Ten years ago, a collection of music enthusiasts, who grew up during the vibrant era of the 1960s and 70s, decided to rekindle their passion for rock and roll. This group, known as Hard Day’s Night (HDN), consists of both men and women who long for the nostalgic hits from their teenage and student years. They began orchestrating concerts in Thiruvananthapuram, featuring the chartbusters from their formative years. Over time, their platform has also served as a stage for several budding bands to showcase their musical talents.
Tommy Cherian, one of HDN’s founding members, fondly recalls their celebration of Woodstock’s 50th anniversary with a local concert featuring a variety of local bands. “Recently, one of our members attended a concert by Rear Admiral (retired) Nirmala Kannan and was captivated by her rendition of the timeless hits from our era. We all agreed it would be a splendid idea to organize a concert featuring her in Thiruvananthapuram. Interestingly, her husband, Vice Admiral (retired) Bhagavatheswaran Kannan, has roots in Thiruvananthapuram,” Tommy explains.
Come June 8, the stage will be set for Nirmala Kannan to captivate audiences with her melodious voice at the Hope and Harmony charity concert, to be held at Trivandrum Club. The event will also feature a performance by HDN musicians. Sankar Krishnan, a management consultant and member of HDN, detailed their noble decision of donating the concert’s proceeds to the Rotary Institute For Children In Need of Special Needs, an esteemed institution in Thiruvananthapuram that has been serving the community for 50 years.
Sankar elaborates, “Currently, the Institute is experiencing severe financial challenges. It serves over 100 students, many of whom come from economically underprivileged backgrounds. The perseverance and dedication of Principal Beena AR, along with her team of teachers and caretakers, have been crucial in keeping the institute running, albeit with great difficulty.”
The event will commence at 6.30 pm with a recital by the children of the Institute, showcasing their talent and enthusiasm. Following this touching performance, Nirmala Kannan will take the stage at 7 pm, serenading the audience with some of the most cherished songs of the past.
. The HDN musicians will continue the musical journey from 8.30 pm onwards, ensuring the night is filled with joyous nostalgia, culminating in a delightful dinner for all attendees.
