MR Deshmukh’s Solo Exhibition ‘Vivid Impressions’ Captivates Bengaluru’s Art Scene

Writing about a person who values their privacy while maintaining an aura of humility can be a formidable task. MR Deshmukh, an esteemed artist from Kolhapur, exemplifies this sentiment perfectly. Deshmukh himself simplifies the matter, saying, “I don’t think there is anything special in what I have done; there are far greater artists than me.” He adds, “Besides, I feel my paintings convey whatever I want to say. Painting is a language in which form and colour speak to viewers. There is not much I can add to that.” His words resonate deeply with his body of work, which indeed speaks volumes without needing further elaboration.

At the robust age of 80, MR Deshmukh continues to create and share his artistry with the world. Currently, he is showcasing an impressive collection of 30 paintings in Bengaluru at the MKF Museum of Art, with the exhibition running until June 29, 2024. What’s particularly noteworthy is that nearly all of these works were produced within the last two years, underscoring his continued creativity and passion.

The exhibition, aptly named “Vivid Impressions,” offers a spectrum of vibrant yet subdued colors that evoke memories and dreams. The assortment features both landscapes and figures, creating a diverse visual experience. Some landscapes depict scenes reminiscent of those viewed from a train window traversing the Indian countryside, while others capture serene city avenues observed from a leisurely café perspective. These pieces reflect a peaceful, almost nostalgic quality that invites viewers to lose themselves in the imagery.

Among the figures captured in his works, Deshmukh pays homage to the quintessential Indian woman. His canvases display women engaged in everyday activities — sewing, resting, caring for an infant, working in the fields, socializing with each other, or balancing loads on their heads. These scenes are painted with profound respect and recognition of the strength and resilience of these women.

. Adding an element of enchanting innocence, some paintings include scenes of small birds perched on or outside windowsills, reminiscent of childhood dreams of green grass and sunlit skies.

Deshmukh’s artistic journey began in Satara, Maharashtra, the place of his birth. Reflecting on his formative years, he explains, “I spent my schooldays wandering between the Krishna and Koyna rivers, and later came to Kolhapur for my college education. Memories of the natural beauty I revelled in during those days are reflected in my work to a great extent.” These early influences are evident in the strong natural elements present in his paintings.

The Shri Bhavani Museum in Satara played a pivotal role in shaping his artistic sensibilities. Frequent visits to the museum, which boasts an impressive collection of works by Indian and Western masters, left an indelible mark on a young Deshmukh. The museum, founded in 1938 by Shri Bhawanrao Pantapratinidhi, the last ruler of Aundh, became a source of inspiration that enriched his understanding of art.

Further honing his craft, Deshmukh studied art at Kalaniketan Mahavidyalay in Kolhapur. His education was supplemented by frequent visits to museums and galleries, reading extensively, and interacting with different people, much like how human communication is refined in social gatherings. Mentored by master painter and sculptor Ravindra Mistry, Deshmukh also drew inspiration from art legends like SH Raza, Baburao Sadwelkar, Alfred Sisley, Claude Monet, and Rodin.

The exhibition “Vivid Impressions” showcases works executed primarily in oils on paper and canvas. Presented by Artenblu, this series continues to exhibit Deshmukh’s lifelong dedication to his craft and his ability to capture the essence of his subjects through the nuanced interplay of form and color. For art lovers in Bengaluru, this exhibition offers not just a visual treat but an emotional journey through India’s landscapes and everyday life seen through the eyes of a seasoned artist.

As viewers walk through the gallery, they are treated to a visual dialogue that needs no words, just as Deshmukh intended. His works carry a simplicity and depth that speak directly to the soul, making this exhibition a must-see for anyone with an appreciation for art that transcends the boundaries of time and place.

For those who wish to experience this celebration of life and nature, “Vivid Impressions” is on display at the MKF Museum of Art until June 29, 2024, offering ample time to delve into the world of MR Deshmukh’s masterful creations.
