Navin Kumar Shares Journey from Reluctant Bachelor to Stand-Up Sensation with “Just Married”

Bengaluru-based comedian Navin Kumar’s followers had been eagerly awaiting his latest stand-up video when he surprised them with an unexpected announcement: he had gotten married. Just two weeks after his January nuptial celebrations, Navin released a video titled “Unmarried in 30s.” Moments before sharing this video, he took to social media to reveal his new marital status. With a humorous post captioned, “Hello world! In a series of events, I got married to the lovely @roshini_muthu two weeks back,” Navin shared a glimpse of his wedding day, featuring himself tying the knot with Roshini Muthukumar. In a playful twist, his mother was seen grabbing his neck, as if she were the one binding him to his new life.

Fast forward seven months, Navin is now touring with his first themed solo stand-up show in English, aptly named “Just Married.” The show encapsulates his life story over the past two years, detailing his journey from being a staunch opponent of marriage to becoming a husband. At 33, Navin admits that the show’s theme wasn’t his initial plan; it naturally evolved as the jokes he crafted gravitated toward this direction. Focused on love, relationships, and marriage, the special provides a candid, comedic look at Navin’s personal evolution over the last six to seven years—a narrative many might find relatable.

“It’s been surprisingly good,” said Navin, nearly a decade into his career, as he reflected on the positive responses following performances in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. Navin had anticipated his audience to be largely composed of newlyweds and those contemplating marriage. However, the show has also attracted singles curious about the comedic take on marriage and seasoned couples who have been married for decades.

“In Bengaluru, a couple who have been married for 20 years attended the show. When I asked them why they were there, they said they wanted to feel nostalgic and understand the ups and downs of marriage from the perspective of today’s generation,” Navin shared, clearly delighted by the diverse appeal of his performance.

Stand-up comedy often reflects societal changes, and Navin’s special is no different. It delves into the modern experience of dating to eventually finding a life partner. “The special also explores the idea of dating apps, matrimonial sites, and how people are growing weary of them,” said Navin, who met Roshini on a dating app after an extensive search.

. Roshini, who works in ecosystem development at a private firm, attended the Chennai performance on August 17 and was a delighted audience member. “She has seen various versions of a lot of these jokes at open mics and shows before,” Navin revealed. “She loved it and was very happy with how others responded, too.”

Navin humorously commented on his wife’s appreciation for his comedy, saying, “She personally has always liked me. Well, she married me. She better like my way of joke-telling.”

Navin has earned over 10 million views on YouTube and recently made his acting debut in the Keerthy Suresh starrer “Raghu Thatha” (2024). He holds high hopes for “Just Married.” Post this tour, Navin plans to revamp the show in November and embark on a more extensive tour. In this upcoming leg, he aims to visit southern cities such as Pondicherry, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Warangal, Mysore, and Manipal, in addition to returning to Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi, and Thiruvananthapuram.

The local comedy scene is abuzz with excitement as Navin’s comedic observations resonate with a broad spectrum of the audience. From newlyweds to seasoned couples and single individuals, his stand-up show, “Just Married,” has struck a chord with many.

Fans in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram can catch Navin Kumar live with “Just Married” on September 7 at 7 pm at Spotlight Social on MG Road, Kochi, and on September 8 at Eve’s Coffee in Anayara, Thiruvananthapuram. Tickets are available on bookmyshow.com.

Navin Kumar’s comedic journey from a marriage skeptic to a married man continues to unfold, and his refreshing take on the trials and triumphs of love and relationships promises to keep audiences laughing across the nation.
