In a significant development for the global film industry, veteran actor Shabana Azmi, renowned director SS Rajamouli, celebrated producer Ritesh Sidhwani, and esteemed cinematographer Ravi Varman are among the 487 new members invited this year by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The announcement, made late Tuesday night on the Academy’s official website, highlights a diverse array of artists and executives who have made significant contributions to theatrical motion pictures.

The Academy, based in Los Angeles, emphasized that membership selection is grounded in professional qualifications along with a continuous commitment to representation, inclusion, and equity. This year’s list reflects a rich tapestry of global cinema talent, underscoring the Academy’s dedication to these core values.

Shabana Azmi, a towering figure in Indian and international cinema, has been extended an invitation to join the Actors branch. This honor coincides with a milestone in Azmi’s career as she completes 50 years in the film industry. Azmi’s illustrious journey began with her groundbreaking debut in Shyam Benegal’s “Ankur” in 1974, and she has since built a formidable legacy with iconic films such as “Godmother,” “Arth,” “The Reluctant Fundamentalist,” “In Custody,” and more recently, Karan Johar’s “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.” Azmi’s portfolio boasts over 140 Hindi films and 12 international productions, solidifying her status as a cinematic powerhouse.

Joining Azmi in this prestigious circle is SS Rajamouli, the visionary director who steered the epic period drama “RRR” to global acclaim. The film holds the distinction of being the first Indian feature production to secure an Academy Award in 2023, a milestone achieved through the film’s winning of the Best Original Song Oscar for “Naatu Naatu.” Rajamouli’s influence in cinema is further marked by the inclusion of independent filmmaker Rima Das, whose acclaimed works like “Tora’s Husband” and “Village Rockstars” have garnered both critical and popular praise.

The Producers branch of the Academy welcomes Ritesh Sidhwani, known for producing landmark films such as “Gully Boy” and “Dil Chahta Hai.” These films have not only been box-office successes but have also left an indelible mark on contemporary Indian cinema, pushing the boundaries of storytelling and social commentary.

Adding to this wave of recognition, Rama Rajamouli, the costume designer noted for her work on “RRR” and the wife of SS Rajamouli, has been invited to join the Costume Designers branch. Her work, particularly in “RRR,” has been lauded for its meticulous attention to historical detail and vibrant creativity.
