Born on the 26th of October, 1974, Raveena Tandon epitomizes the quintessential Mumbai essence. Raised in the vibrant city, she attended the esteemed Jamnabai Narsee School in Juhu and later pursued higher education at Mithibai College, Vile Parle. However, her quest for knowledge in formal education was short-lived as she decided to answer the call of the cinematic world after just two years at college. This career-defining moment came while she was interning at Genesis PR under the mentorship of renowned ad-guru Prahlad Kakkar. It was during this period that photographer-director Shantanu Sheorey recognized her potential, propelling her into the limelight and marking the beginning of her illustrious acting career.
Raveena Tandon, remembered fondly for her charming performance in the classic comedy Andaz Apna Apna, started her film career at a tender age. At just 16, she made her Bollywood debut in 1991 alongside Salman Khan in the film Patthar Ke Phool, which quickly became a commercial success. Soon after, she became a household name, starring in numerous hit films throughout the ’90s, such as the action-packed Mohra, heart-warming Dilwale, and family-drama Laadla. Her prolific career in Hindi cinema includes roles in beloved movies like Andaz Apna Apna, Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Taqdeerwala, and many others, solidifying her status as one of the era’s most popular actresses.
In a move that highlighted her deep compassion and commitment to making a difference, Raveena made a remarkable decision at the age of 21, adopting two young girls, Pooja and Chhaya, from her extended family. In an interview with mid-day, she explained, ‘They are a distant cousin’s children. Due to certain circumstances in their family, they needed someone to love and take care of them. Both have been a part of my life ever since. I have never hidden anything from them.’ Despite societal ridicule, Raveena’s decision to raise these girls as her own has brought immense joy and fulfillment to her life. Pooja, who later became an event manager, and Chhaya, an air hostess, appeared with Raveena on the Zee TV show Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai in 2002, symbolizing the affectionate bond they share.
The challenges of adopting two children at such a young age were not without public scrutiny. Raveena candidly shared the backlash she received from those who questioned her ability to maintain her film career alongside her parenting responsibilities. ‘Unfortunately, people say nasty things to you when you take such a step, even if your intentions are pure. I faced flak from people, who said that the move would ruin my career. However, it turned out to be for the better. My life would have never been as blissful without them as it is today,’ she expressed.
In 2004, Raveena’s personal life took another beautiful turn when she married Anil Thadani, a renowned film distributor. With their union, the couple welcomed two biological children into their lives, a daughter named Rasha in 2005 and a son named Ranbirvardhan in 2007. Following in their mother’s footsteps, Rasha and Ranbirvardhan have embraced philanthropic efforts of their own. Their involvement with the NGO ‘In Defence of Animals’ showcases their passion for social service and charitable activities.
By 2021, Raveena celebrated an impressive milestone, having completed 30 years in the film industry. Reflecting on her journey, she shared, ‘It’s been a long and great journey, for sure.
. It has taught me a lot. I remember I was so young when I started. It was not easy but I didn’t quit and always worked hard to make a respectable place for myself. There’s so much I have learned in all these years. Life is the best teacher. Every day comes with a new lesson.’
Despite the highs and lows of her career, Raveena harbors no regrets, acknowledging the path destiny has paved for her. ‘I don’t have any regrets in life. I might have an incomplete dream but I never regret anything I have done. I believe destiny has a path to follow. I love my life. It could not be better than this. There is nothing that I would like to change about my life. I have made mistakes like other human beings. I have learned from them. So, no regrets. I thank God for giving me whatever I wanted in life,’ she cherishes.
In more recent years, Raveena has chosen to be more selective with her projects, opting only for roles that resonate deeply with her. ‘I am not interested to be seen on every Friday. I have the luxury to do that today. Earlier I used to do 30 films in one go. Now at this stage, I have the luxury to choose what I want to do,’ she stated.
Raveena’s interest in wildlife and environmental conservation has also led her to significant roles outside of film. In 2018, she was appointed as the brand ambassador for the Sanjay Gandhi National Park by the Maharashtra government. Her passion for wildlife is further displayed in her work as a wildlife photographer, showcasing her collection at Mumbai’s Jehangir Art Gallery. Her advocacy extends to wildlife protection, demonstrated through the symbolic adoption of a leopard at Sanjay Gandhi National Park, a family endeavor financially supported by her children, who emptied their piggy banks for this noble cause.
Raveena Tandon’s life, encompassing her notable film career and her commitment to family and social causes, serves as an inspiring testament to her multifaceted personality. As she continues to embrace new roles, both on and off the screen, she remains a beacon of inspiration for her admirers, reminding all of the fulfilling life that comes with compassion and dedication.
