When award-winning explorer and filmmaker Reza Pakravan ventures into uncharted territories across the Asian Arabian Peninsula, he encounters his fears and, eventually, overcomes the apprehensions and accomplishes his goals.
Known for brave excursions to the world’s most secluded areas, Pakravan was intrigued by Saudi Arabia’s recent opening to global explorers. This curiosity sparked the inception of a bold expedition, leading a team into the untrodden lands of Arabia. His two-year cinematographic journey culminated in the six-part series, “Hidden Frontiers: Arabia,” which premiered on the Discovery Channel and discovery+ on May 13.
The series represents a narrative quilt, piecing together stories of distinct species, unique habitations, and vital water sources. Pakravan remarks, “We had set out on a journey to unravel Saudi Arabia. What we found was more than we could have imagined – caves and canyons devoid of human trace, ecological tales echoing from Oman. Saudi Arabia was the catalyst; the rest unfolded a beautiful tapestry.”
The sweeping vistas of Oman, Iran, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia’s deserts unravel throughout the season, captivating viewers with untouched wilderness. “Our expedition was not purely about geographic discoveries; it’s the fusion of education, discovery, and the spirit of adventure,” says Pakravan. The series also pioneers into Bahrain’s waters, documenting the mysterious Dugongs, a venture possibly done for the first time.
The expedition was a journey across both land and time, trailing canyons that served as ancient human pathways and bringing to light Neolithic artefacts, including arrowheads and horns of an Ibex once assumed extinct in the area. These relics, discovered as whispers from the past, have been contributed to a Riyadh museum.
The series also sheds light on endangered species and vanishing lifestyles, exploring age-old mysteries. Pakravan explains that monumental efforts went into preparing for the mission, “We’ve tested the edges of human survival techniques.” Besides exhaustive research, the team poured 18 months into physical training, which blended deep-sea diving. “Real-life challenges always surpass what you expect. Experiences ranged from breathtaking underwater caves to precarious mountain climbs. In Oman, it was indigenous knowledge that came to our aid in dire straits,” Pakravan recounts.
For Pakravan, unearthing new territories is his life’s work, and through “Hidden Frontiers,” he aims to showcase the existence of mystifying corners of the world yet to be explored. “The privilege of being an explorer unveiling these secrets is immense. The thrill of facing the unknown is without parallel,” he enthuses.
Indeed, it’s this very adrenaline that awaits viewers, drawing them into a realm where each step reveals another layer of our planet’s hidden wonders. The series invites audiences to share in unique experiences, from heart-stopping encounters to awe-inspiring landscapes. With the second episode airing tonight at 9pm, and subsequent episodes on Mondays, “Hidden Frontiers: Arabia” promises to be a journey of a lifetime for those who share Pakravan’s passion for discovery.
What does the future hold for Pakravan post “Hidden Frontiers: Arabia”? His sights are already set on the next horizon, “Hidden Frontiers: China,” promising to continue his legacy of unveiling the mysteries of the unexplored world.
“Hidden Frontiers: Arabia” is broadcast on the Discovery Channel and discovery+ every Monday at 9 pm, inviting viewers to experience the unfolding saga of Arabia’s last unexplored terrains.
