Shalini Pandey Reflects on Collaborating With Junaid Khan in ‘Maharaj’

After achieving fame in the Telugu film industry with her debut in Arjun Reddy (2017), actress Shalini Pandey’s journey in Bollywood has been more challenging than anticipated. Her first Bollywood film, Jayeshbhai Jordaar (2022), featuring the charismatic Ranveer Singh, had the trappings of an ideal launch. Released under the Yash Raj Films banner, the movie boasted a stellar cast and crew, yet it failed to strike a chord with the audience. Pandey candidly describes the aftermath as “heartbreaking.”

Recalling the experience, Pandey shares, “Some people liked the film, some just didn’t—as simple as that. I cried for many days. It was a big deal for me to be part of a Yash Raj movie, to have a co-actor like Ranveer Singh, and to work with the best cast and crew. I don’t come from a film family. I didn’t know it would break my heart so badly. I was not prepared for it.” She eventually reframed the disappointment as a pivotal lesson. “When I look at it now in retrospect, it let me loose [and I realized] that nothing is in my control,” she reflects.

Armed with this newfound resilience, Pandey is pressing ahead with an array of new projects, most notably the film Maharaj. This highly-anticipated movie marks the debut of Junaid Khan, the talented son of Bollywood megastar Aamir Khan. Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra, Maharaj is a period drama set against the backdrop of the 1862 Maharaja Libel Case.

Addressing concerns about being overshadowed by Junaid Khan, Pandey confidently asserts, “I don’t think I will [be sidelined]. When you see the film, you will know that everyone is important. I can’t say anything about my character right now.” The actress has nothing but praise for Junaid, her co-actor in the movie. “Junaid is a sweet, supporting co-actor. He is a very hard-working human being so much so that sometimes he works a little too much. I had to tell him that he had to slow down a bit.”

Pandey details the enriching experience of working on Maharaj, highlighting her interactions with both her co-actors and the senior artists involved in the project. “Technically, it was one of the best teams I worked with.

. I’m a curious person, who is all over the place wanting to know [how things work]. I got to work with DoP [director of photography] Rajeev Ravi sir. His lighting sense amused me, and I have now learned the science behind it. It was indeed a unique opportunity to learn and grow.”

Even beyond Maharaj, Shalini Pandey’s career trajectory includes several promising projects. She is set to appear in both a Prime Video series and a Netflix offering, indicating a robust pipeline of work that spans various genres and platforms.

For context, Shalini Pandey shot to stardom at a young age with her debut in the Telugu film Arjun Reddy. The film was a runaway success and became a cultural phenomenon, catapulting Pandey into the limelight. Transitioning from regional cinema to Bollywood, however, has proven to be a more daunting journey for the actress.

Jayeshbhai Jordaar was envisioned as a significant milestone in Shalini’s career. The film, a social comedy addressing issues of gender discrimination and patriarchal norms, offered an impactful narrative. Despite this, its mixed reception left Pandey grappling with unmet expectations. While the film’s message resonated with some, it didn’t achieve the widespread acclaim Pandey had hoped for.

Discussing the emotional rollercoaster post-Jayeshbhai Jordaar, Shalini Pandey admits to a period of deep reflection and personal growth. “I was heartbroken for days. The movie not performing well was a huge blow. But upon reflection, I realized that I couldn’t control everything. This understanding has made me stronger and more adaptable.”

This period of introspection has prepared her well for her role in Maharaj. The film’s historical context and substantial storyline offer her a platform to showcase her versatility. Working with seasoned professionals and a debutant like Junaid Khan brings a balanced dynamic to the set, fostering both learning and collaboration.

In summation, Shalini Pandey’s journey in Bollywood may have started on a rocky note, but her resilience and passion for acting ensure a promising horizon. Her experiences have endowed her with valuable lessons, equipping her for the varied and exciting roles that lie ahead. Whether through her work in Maharaj, her upcoming streaming projects, or future film endeavors, Pandey continues to carve a niche for herself in the competitive world of Indian cinema.
