The footage featured an armyman teaching his three-year-old daughter the revered Tamil song, ‘Achamillai Achamillai,’ penned by the seminal poet Subramania Bharati. This armyman was none other than Major Mukund Varadarajan. Struck by the depth of duty and patriotism reflected in that video, Periasamy felt compelled to delve deeper into Mukund’s life, spurring the genesis of this ambitious film project.
The narrative of ‘Amaran’ is woven around Major Mukund Varadarajan’s dedication to his nation, culminating in his ultimate sacrifice during counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir. It was during this tumultuous period that Major Mukund, while leading his unit, the 44 Rashtriya Rifles, laid down his life, an act for which he was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime military honor. Rajkumar Periasamy reflects, “Mukund’s commitment to teaching his daughter the patriotic song, despite the unknowable fate awaiting him, speaks volumes about the values he embodied.”
However, ‘Amaran’ goes beyond depicting heroism on the battlefield. It peels back layers to reveal the man behind the soldier. The audience is afforded an intimate glimpse into Mukund’s formative years at Madras Christian College, a place where he not only excelled academically but also met the love of his life, Indhu Rebecca Varghese.
