‘Stree 2’ Breaks Box Office Records with Blockbuster Opening

Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao have once again captivated audiences with their latest release, ‘Stree 2’. The horror-comedy, which saw its grand opening on Independence Day, not only overcame a formidable three-way clash but has also set unprecedented records at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2024 on its first day. This remarkable achievement has added a new chapter to the legacy of the ‘Stree’ franchise.

The much-anticipated film was pitted against John Abraham’s intense action thriller ‘Vedaa’ and Akshay Kumar’s sports drama ‘Khel Khel Mein’. Despite the stiff competition, ‘Stree 2’ emerged victorious in terms of box office collections and set new records by dethroning major previous hits. The combined total of first-day earnings and paid previews on August 14 and 15 came to a whopping Rs 64.8 crore.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to social media to share the film’s incredible first-day performance. He stated, “#Stree2 CREATES HISTORY… When #Boxoffice speaks louder than words… #Stree2 defies *all* pre-release expectations and predictions… Opens to a FANTABULOUS START, emerging as the BIGGEST OPENER OF 2024 [#Hindi films].” He further elaborated on the numbers, revealing that ‘#Stree2’s first day business was ahead of other major releases including ‘Pathaan’, ‘Animal’, and the Hindi version of ‘KGF2’, thus setting a new benchmark for the horror-comedy genre.

The success stories of ‘Pathaan’ and ‘Animal’ paled in comparison as ‘Stree 2’ stormed the theatres, grossing higher than the former’s Rs 55 crore and the latter’s Rs 54.

.75 crore first-day collections. Impressively, ‘Stree 2’ even surpassed the initial earnings of films like ‘War’ and ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ (TOH), which had previously held strong positions in the box office hierarchy.

Following the success of its predecessor, ‘Stree 2’ continued to capture the eerie atmosphere of Chanderi but introduced fresh elements to its storyline. Directed by Amar Kaushik, the film delves deeper into the supernatural universe crafted by the original ‘Stree’. The sequel shifts its focus from a ghost preying on men to a sinister entity named Sarkata, which targets modern, empowered women, creating a new layer of horror and intrigue.

The plot revolves around familiar characters Bicky (Rajkummar Rao), Bitu (Aparshakti Khurana), JD (Abhishek Banerjee), and Rudra (Pankaj Tripathi), as they band together with the enigmatic Stree to defend their village from the malevolent spirit’s deadly pursuit. The engaging narrative and compelling performances have captivated audiences, leaving them eager for more.

The anticipation for ‘Stree 2’ was palpable even before its official release. The makers strategically arranged paid previews on the night of August 14, which contributed significantly to the impressive opening numbers. This approach, combined with the strong word-of-mouth and positive reviews, propelled the film to its record-setting status.

Adarsh commented on the clash with ‘Vedaa’ and ‘Khel Khel Mein’, suggesting that the competition was more hyped than it actually affected ‘Stree 2’s performance. He noted that ‘Stree 2’ was far ahead in urban centres and garnered unprecedented attention in mass pockets, leaving the competition trailing. He pondered on the potential of ‘Stree 2’ had it been a solo release, implying that the film’s success could have been even more phenomenal without the clash.

With its groundbreaking success on day one, ‘Stree 2’ has set the tone for what could be an even more profitable week ahead. The film’s ability to surpass the first week’s earning of its predecessor within just one day is a testament to its enormous popularity and the strong pull of its storyline and star cast.

In a time where Bollywood faces intense scrutiny and audiences have become selective, ‘Stree 2’ stands out as a resounding success. The film has not only entertained but also redefined the genre, blending horror with comedy in a way that resonates deeply with viewers.

As the film continues its run in theatres, it remains to be seen how many more records ‘Stree 2’ will shatter and how it will shape the future of horror-comedies in Indian cinema. One thing is clear: Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, and the entire team of ‘Stree 2’ have delivered a cinematic experience that will be remembered for years to come.
