The Play Stirring Contemporary Reflection: “Taking Sides” in Chennai

Known for its provocative portrayal of moral ambiguity during turbulent times, the play “Taking Sides” arrives in Chennai having previously captivated audiences nationwide with nearly 50 performances. At its heart, the drama explores the life of Wilhelm Furtwängler, the renowned and controversial conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, labeled with the divisive epithet, “Hitler’s favourite conductor.” This epithet encapsulates the central conflict explored in the play as Furtwängler faces post-World War II interrogation by a U.S. Army major, Steve Arnold, a former insurance investigator. As Furtwängler wrestles with his allegiance to his art against the backdrop of moral quandaries, the audience is drawn into a contemplation of right versus wrong during oppressive times.

Director Atul Kumar, whose profound engagement with the play began with István Szabó’s film adaptation, passionately brings this complex narrative to life. “The current global climate sadly renders the script incredibly pertinent,” Atul notes, emphasizing the timeliness of staging such a production today. Conceived amidst the uncertainty of the pandemic, “Taking Sides” scrutinizes the intersection of art, freedom, and politics in times of fascism and suppression — raising poignant questions about personal morality and the delicate line between complicity and survival.

For Atul, known for his vibrant and larger-than-life theatrical expressions, taking on a play with a classical, dialogue-driven approach marks a significant shift. “Exploring realistic theatre focused on arguments and words in this venture has offered an enriching departure from my usual style,” he says. Traditionally performed in a traverse setting to physically embody its thematic dualities, the play has been adapted for Chennai’s venue, which does not support this particular layout. Nevertheless, the intent remains to cultivate a sense of division, prompting audiences to confront contrasting perspectives within the confines of the play’s immersive storyline.

Historical fidelity is another cornerstone of this production. While some historical context might elude modern audiences, the meticulous research and dedication to authenticity remain intact. “Our cast continuously engaged with literary and journalistic materials, debating where we each stand on the issues presented,” Atul elaborates. It is this vigorous intellectual exchange that contributes to the dynamic interpretation of Furtwängler’s character, challenging viewers to reconsider the nuances of loyalty and ideological alignment in such fraught circumstances.

Since its inception over a series of Zoom calls during periods of lockdown, “Taking Sides” has traversed through unusual times, mirroring the evolving discussions it incites. Atul observes a distinct shift in audience responses, noting an increased openness and vocal engagement with the themes. “Society has grown more receptive, less fearful of confronting the difficult questions we pose,” he observes, underscoring the play’s role in facilitating meaningful discourse around complex moral and ethical considerations.

This acclaimed production will grace the stage at Medai, Alwarpet, on October 19 at 7:30 pm, offering a chance for viewers to immerse themselves in a thought-provoking theatrical experience. Tickets are available on BookMyShow for ₹499.

As “Taking Sides” continues to provoke discussion around the delicate interplay of art, ideology, and personal integrity, it offers not only a retelling of historical events but a mirror to contemporary societal issues. By instigating introspection and debate, it urges audiences to gaze beyond the dichotomous labels that often oversimplify our understanding of human choices. The play thus not only resurrects past dialogues but also illuminates the pressing concerns of today’s complex world, making it a compelling theatrical undertaking.
