With two decades of dedication, Simone Tata climbed the corporate ladder and took her place as the chairperson of Lakme, steering it towards becoming a cornerstone brand in the Indian cosmetics sector.

Simone Tata’s prowess was further acknowledged when she was enlisted onto the board of Tata Industries in 1989, reinforcing the prestige of her commercial acumen. Within eight years, her stewardship had positioned Lakme as a coveted name in beauty and fashion. But rather than rest on laurels, the Tata Group strategically sold Lakme to Hindustan Lever Limited (HLL) in 1996, a move that generated the capital necessary to sow the seeds of Trent Limited.

It introduced Westside, a fashionable retail chain, and Landmark, a name synonymous with bookstores and leisure shopping, amongst other brands. Shareholders of Lakme didn’t find themselves adrift after the sale; instead, they were endowed with an equivalent stake in Trent, ensuring their continued involvement in the Tate Group’s retail odyssey. Simone’s role evolved to become the Non-Executive Chairman of Trent Ltd until her retirement on the 30th of October, 2006.
