There are numerous Indians who worked abroad but later decided to return to India to launch their own businesses. One such person is Vani Kola, a remarkable venture capitalist from India, who carved an illustrious career for herself in Silicon Valley, USA, for an impressive 22 years. Today, she stands as the founder and managing director of Kalaari Capital, an early-stage venture capital firm based in India.
Vani’s journey is an inspiring tale of grit and vision. Born in Hyderabad, she graduated with a degree in engineering from Osmania University. Eager to explore new horizons, she moved to the United States to pursue a master’s degree at Arizona State University. Her academic journey laid the foundation for her future entrepreneurial endeavors.
In 1996, Vani took a significant step by founding RightWorks, an e-procurement company that would become a cornerstone of her career. RightWorks was geared towards optimizing procurement processes for businesses, and under her leadership, it flourished. Only five years later, in 2001, Vani made headlines by selling RightWorks to ICG for a staggering USD 657 million, which converts to around Rs 5480 crore today. This acquisition marked her as a formidable business Force.
Not one to rest on her laurels, Vani went on to establish another firm, Certus Software, which again demonstrated her talent for recognizing and capitalizing on market needs. After successfully leading Certus, she sold the company, signaling the end of another successful venture and the beginning of a new strategic pivot in her career.
Determined to give back to her homeland, Vani made the pivotal decision to move back to India. With a wealth of experience and a passion for fostering innovation, she launched her venture capital firm, initially known as Indo-US Venture Partners, in collaboration with Vinod Dham and Kuar Shiralagi. Supported by New Enterprise Associates (NEA), this initiative focused on identifying and nurturing promising startups.
However, after four years of fruitful collaboration, NEA decided to exit the joint venture. Undeterred, Vani rebranded the firm as Kalaari Capital in 2012. Under her stewardship, Kalaari Capital has risen to prominence in the Indian startup ecosystem.
. According to the company’s website, the firm has successfully raised USD 850 million and has funded over 110 startups. This significant financial backing has propelled numerous entities into groundbreaking ventures, solidifying Kalaari Capital as a key player in early-stage investments.
Vani Kola’s life is not solely defined by her professional achievements. She is also an avid reader and an enthusiastic writer, regularly sharing her thoughts and insights on various platforms. Her intellect and experiences have garnered her an impressive social media presence, with 87.6K followers on X. Kilimanjaro and participated in multiple marathons, illustrating her persistence and determination both on and off the business field.
Her personal life is just as fulfilling. Vani is a mother to two daughters and is married to Srinivas Kola. She finds great joy in nature and balances her high-octane professional life with a love for the outdoors.
