China Sees Notable Stabilization in April Lottery Sales Growth


The Ministry of Finance has reported a stabilizing trend in lottery sales after experiencing a period of remarkable growth rates. Despite April’s total sales demonstrating just a negligible decline compared to March, the numbers still paint a promising picture for the lottery sector in China. The month of April saw lottery sales accumulate to CNY55.60bn, a fractional drop from the previous month.

Diving into the specifics, the Sports Lottery was responsible for CNY36.69bn of April’s total, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 5.7% or CNY1.96bn. This growth, while steady, paled in comparison to the Welfare Lottery’s performance. The Welfare Lottery contributed CNY18.76bn which marked an impressive annual rise of 20.3% when compared to the figures of April 2023.

Accumulating the data from January to April, the total lottery sales stood at CNY204.92bn, representing a robust 17.0% increase compared to the same period last year. The Sports Lottery was the major contributor in this period, amassing CNY134.96bn and showcasing a respectable 12.7% growth. Meanwhile, the Welfare Lottery surged to CNY69.96bn, recording a phenomenal increase of 26.3% year-on-year.

Analyzing the different types of lotteries, April month showed a broad-based growth across various categories. Instant lottery sales saw a significant hike of 11.7%, reaching CNY9.98bn. Lotto digital reported earnings of CNY16.34bn, which was up by 5.5% compared to the same month last year. Betting activities were also up by 9.7%, bringing in CNY25.

For the period from January to April, lotto digital generated an impressive CNY59.26bn in sales, growing by 10.1% year-on-year. Betting sales showed a modest rise of 2.4%, accumulating to CNY83.40bn over the four months. Instant lottery stood out with a remarkable 60.9% increase in sales, garnering CNY48.95bn. Similarly, the Keno lottery maintained its high growth trajectory, with sales leaping 40.5% to CNY3.83bn during the first four months of the year.

The regional analysis offered by the Ministry of Finance revealed that lottery sales were on the rise across nearly all provinces in April, with only Hubei and Tianjin being exceptions. Guangdong Province topped the charts with the largest increase in sales, witnessing a CNY550m growth in April. It was followed closely by Hunan and Hebei, which saw lottery sales grow by CNY390m and CNY380m, respectively. Xinjiang also demonstrated a significant increase, with sales jumping by CNY330m, positioning it in the fourth place.
