Connecticut reports says 1.8% of state residents suffer from problem gambling

In a detailed study by the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, the attitudes of over 5,000 Connecticut residents toward gambling were examined, revealing a complex relationship with the activity. The majority of those surveyed, 93.5%, deemed gambling as “not at all” or “not very important” in their lives, indicating a prevailing disinterest in the pursuit.

The research offers a snapshot of the state’s stance on gambling at a time when Connecticut is becoming significant in the national gambling landscape, being one of the only seven U.S. states that have embraced legalized online gaming. The introduction of sports betting and iGaming, which began in October of 2021, marks a turning point in Connecticut’s history with gambling.

Despite a general disinterest, there remains a cautious perspective regarding gambling’s repercussions. Over two-thirds (67.2%) of respondents believe that the potential harms outweigh the benefits, with addiction topping the list of concerns, as cited by 69.2%.

However, there is an expectation that both gamblers and providers should share the responsibility in minimizing these harms. A substantial 70.8% hold this view, suggesting a call for accountability on both ends. Nevertheless, the integrity and fairness of gambling’s operation in the state elicit neither confidence nor skepticism from residents, with 68.7% expressing no opinion on the matter. A smaller percentage, 17.3%, express dissatisfaction with the government’s efforts to mitigate gambling-related harm.

When considering the advantages of legalized gambling, employment and increased government revenue are the most acknowledged, with 21.6% and 20.1% of respondents recognizing these benefits, respectively. Additionally, financial and employment benefits for tribes (12.7%) and the capacity for Connecticut to retain funds that might otherwise have been spent out-of-state (13.5%) were also viewed favorably.

Despite the mixed feelings toward the sector, problem gambling remains a relatively contained issue, with only 1.8% of participants categorizing themselves as problem gamblers. This represents around 50,000 adults across Connecticut’s population of over 3.6 million, and contrasts with the 62.6% who identify as recreational gamblers. Another 4.9% are considered at-risk gamblers.

The report coincides with a marked improvement in Connecticut’s gambling revenue figures throughout 2023. Additional insights arise from an iDEA (iDevelopment and Economic Association) commissioned report, which concluded that there are positive links between online casinos and their land-based counterparts. Contrary to the belief that the advent of iGaming would cannibalize traditional casino revenues, the study suggests an invigorating effect.

Before the launch of online casinos in Connecticut, the land-based market was facing a yearly revenue decline. Following the arrival of iGaming, a 0.34% rise in Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) was observed. This pattern is not unique to Connecticut; other states chosen for the study experienced similar trends. Pennsylvania’s land-based GGR rose by 0.14%, while Michigan saw a more substantial increase, with its land-based casino GGR jumping by 4.89%.

These figures prove to be a strong argument against the notion that online gaming hurts physical casinos. Instead, the situation in Connecticut—and mirrored by several other states—reveals a synergistic relationship where the ascendance of iGaming seems to reinvigorate interest and revenue in traditional gambling establishments.

In summary, the nuanced view of Connecticut’s residents on gambling underscores the complexity of integrating this form of entertainment into the social and economic fabric of the state. Efforts to address addiction and ensure fairness must be balanced with understanding the economic potential that both traditional and online gambling avenues offer. As Connecticut navigates this territory, continuing to assess public sentiment and industry trends will be crucial for policymakers to strike the optimal balance.
