Fanatics launches online sports betting and casino in Michigan

Michigan has become the latest battleground for online gambling as Fanatics Sportsbook and Fanatics Casino take the stage, providing residents with a fresh platform for sports betting and digital casino games. The launch has drawn attention to the rapid expansion of FBG’s Fanatics brand, which now includes Michigan among the states it serves.

The integration is significant for Michigan’s online gamblers, as Fanatics Sportsbook takes over from the former PointsBet brand. In a seamless transition, existing PointsBet customers will find their username, password, account balance, rewards points, and responsible gaming settings already transferred to the Fanatics platform. This marks another strategic step for FBG, who has been systematically phasing out PointsBet across the United States since its acquisition in August 2023.

With Michigan on board, the Fanatics Sportsbook is now up and running in 13 states, including Colorado, Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia. Their presence is not just virtual; retail betting venues operating under the Fanatics brand are also operational in Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

The state also joins Pennsylvania and West Virginia in hosting the online casino offering, signaling the growing emphasis Fanatics places on diversifying its gambling portfolio to include both sports betting and traditional online casino games within the same app. This strategic embedding of casino games in the sportsbook app offers a convenient one-stop gambling experience for users in these three states.

Although FBG is steadily rolling out its offerings, replacing PointsBet in various territories, the company has not provided a specific timeline for when it anticipates the full rebranding process to conclude across the remaining states. The ongoing transitions highlight the dynamic nature of the online gambling industry and the intensive competition among operators to consolidate their brands and user bases.

Michigan’s welcoming of Fanatics corresponds with the state reporting record-setting monthly igaming revenue figures for January. There was an 18.4% annual increase in gross igaming revenue, leading to a new high of $181.9 million. Sports betting, too, experienced an upsurge, with gross receipts climbing 40.7% to $47.7 million, and overall handle increasing by 21.4% to $577.4 million across the state.

More broadly, total gross online gambling revenue enveloping both igaming and sports betting saw a year-on-year rise of 22.6% in January, reaching $229.6 million. Post promotional deductions, also known as adjusted gross receipts (AGR), jumped by 20.7% from last year to $183.0 million. Unpacking these figures further reveals an 18.7% increase in adjusted gross igaming revenue, which hit $164.2 million, and a 5.6% rise in adjusted gross sports betting receipts totaling $18.8 million.

Contrasting sharply with the booming online sector, Detroit’s land-based casinos observed a downturn, with revenue dipping by 8.8% compared to the previous year, coming in at $94.4 million for January. This divergent trend highlights the shifting preferences of gamblers toward digital platforms, with online casinos and sportsbooks, like those of Fanatics, now providing convenient, engaging, and accessible alternatives to traditional brick-and-mortar establishments.

The entry of Fanatics Sportsbook and Casino into Michigan exemplifies the ongoing transformation of the U.S. gambling landscape. As technological advances and regulatory changes open new opportunities, companies like FBG are quick to seize the potential for growth, demonstrating the agility and ambition that characterize the modern gambling industry. As Fanatics continues its expansion, the company seems set to play a significant role in shaping the future of online betting and gaming, offering a comprehensive gambling experience to its swiftly expanding user base.
