Iowa sports betting handle and revenue rise in January

Iowa’s sports betting industry started the year with robust activity, with total consumer spending reaching the $259.5 million mark in January. This impressive figure represents an 11.1% increase from the $233.6 million recorded in January 2023, although it fell 8.2% short of the $282.7 million bet in December. The lion’s share of January’s bets occurred online, where $238.4 million was spent, while retail sportsbooks contributed an additional $21.1 million.

The financial outcome from these activities saw sports betting revenue ascend to $22.1 million during the month, which is notably 33.9% higher than the $16.5 million from the same period last year but does not quite reach the heights of December’s $26.3 million. Of the total revenue, online betting platforms claimed $20.5 million, leaving $1.5 million to retail’s account.

A closer look at the key players in the market reveals that FanDuel and their partnership with Diamond Jo Dubuque remain unmatched in their lead, bringing in revenues of $8.0 million from an impressive handle of $68.0 million. DraftKings, in collaboration with Wild Rose Jefferson, trailed at a respectable second, recording $3.1 million in revenues on a $39.2 million handle originating from both online and retail operations.

The influence of DraftKings in Iowa is further illustrated with their partnership with Wild Rose Clinton securing the third spot for January. This joint effort garnered $2.7 million in revenue from bets totaling $29.8 million. Another Wild Rose venue, located in Emmetsburg, also partnered with DraftKings, generating $2.4 million in revenue off the back of a $24.8 million handle.

Overall winnings for players amounted to a substantial $237.4 million throughout January. Breaking it down, online players scooped up $217.9 million, while the retail segment awarded $19.5 million. January also proved a beneficial month for tax collections, with the state receiving $1.5 million in sports betting taxes.

January’s success story was further bolstered by the entry of Fanatics Betting and Gaming (FBG), who last week marked their launch into Iowa’s bustling sports betting market. Fanatics has taken over the reigns from PointsBet in the Hawkeye State, signifying a strategic move within the industry. Patrons of Catfish Bend Casino, which previously hosted a PointsBet retail sportsbook, will now see the brand transition to Fanatics Sportsbook, complete with new self-service betting kiosks installed by Suzohapp.

Iowa becomes the 12th state in Fanatics Sportsbook’s portfolio, as FBG continues to phase out the PointsBet brand across the country following the acquisition of PointsBet US in August 2023. Despite the transition, Catfish Bend Casino made a modest start under the new branding with $311,186 in revenue from $3.7 million in wagers.

This landscape of changing partnerships and strong financial performance indicates a dynamic and expanding market in Iowa. The incorporation of new players like FBG into the mix promises to keep the environment competitive and innovative. As the regulatory horizon for sports betting continues to evolve and technology advances, the ever-growing interest from consumers suggests that the market is set for further substantial growth and diversification.

In conclusion, Iowa’s robust kickoff in January demonstrates the potential for sports betting as a significant contributor to both the entertainment sector and state revenue. The wins and investments of January provide a glimpse into a promising year for the Iowa sports betting industry, where both bettors and operators look poised to thrive.
