LaLiga clamps down on “nefarious” betting behaviour with US Integrity link

In a pivotal move to reinforce the integrity of Spanish football, LaLiga has announced a landmark collaboration with ProhiBet, an innovative solution targeting prohibited betting activity. ProhiBet, which was launched in February 2023, is the brainchild of a partnership between US Integrity, a company specializing in wagering monitoring services, and Odds On Compliance, a compliance technology, and consultation firm within the sports betting and gaming industry.

This strategic alliance promises to equip LaLiga with cutting-edge analytical tools that will monitor Spain’s top two football leagues, vigilantly scanning for any irregular betting patterns that might indicate foul play. The intent is crystal-clear: to ensure that the esteemed sport remains untainted by corruption and that games are contested in nothing but the spirit of fair competition.

Javier Tebas, the president of LaLiga, expressed unbridled enthusiasm about this new venture with US Integrity, underscoring it as a significant step toward fortifying the bedrock of integrity and transparency that professional football stands on. Similarly, Matthew Holt, US Integrity chief executive, and co-founder, conveyed his excitement for the expansion of their international operations while emphasizing the value they see in synchronizing alerting processes for matches across the globe in collaboration with LaLiga.

However, LaLiga is not taking to this battlefield alone. It joins a coalition of international professional sports leagues that have sought to strengthen betting compliance through ProhiBet. Earlier in August 2023, the Big 12 Conference under the National Collegiate Athletic Association broadened its vigilant gaze by adopting the services of ProhiBet. This was followed by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), in September, which aimed to prohibit athletes and coaches from placing wagers on UFC events, safeguarding the integrity of the sport.

In the realm of mixed martial arts, the Professional Fighters League (PFL) likewise joined hands with ProhiBet in February, with aspirations to fortify its regulatory mechanisms against betting-related violations. These moves across different sports manifest a shared determination to preserve the sanctity and fairness intrinsic to athletic competition.

Amplifying concerns, a 2023 Integrity Report by Sportradar unveiled disturbing findings: a total of 1,329 matches across various sports elicited suspicion for unscrupulous betting activities – a staggering figure with significant repercussions for the sports industry. Of these, football bore the brunt, with 880 suspected incidents accounting for a massive 66.2% of the total, outstripping basketball, which was a distant second.

When drilling down into geographic specifics, Europe has manifested an alarming 15% year-on-year increase in shadowy football matches, finding itself at the epicenter of this murky abyss. Overall, Europe topped the charts for the total number of dubious contests in all of sports, recording 667 instances of suspicious matches, demonstrating a climb that surpassed the previous year’s already heightened figures, second only to Asia’s significant jump in detections.

The fight against corruption in sport is a formidable and ongoing challenge, rallying organizations worldwide to stand guard against the tide of deceit that threatens to undermine the very essence of competition. LaLiga, through the strategic implementation of ProhiBet’s technology and partnership with industry leaders such as US Integrity and Odds On Compliance, is taking a robust stance in this global effort.

Through diligent monitoring and prompt action on spurious betting alerts, LaLiga is setting a standard for sports leagues across the continents. The message is unequivocal: integrity is paramount, and those who dare to compromise the ethos of sport through nefarious betting behavior will find no quarter here.
